A History Rich in Variety and Creativity - Alan and Ellen Shapiro
In this episode, we stroll down memory lane with Alan Shapiro, who in the 1980’s, established one of the most plant diverse nurseries in the southeastern U.S, known initially as San Felasco Nurseries and then as Grandiflora. His journey includes growing up in Miami Beach, attending college at Michigan State, living on a kibbutz in Israel, and returning to Gainesville where he began his career in horticulture. Alan also served as FNGLA president in 1996-97 and was awarded the prestigious Wendell E. Butler Award in 2000. This episode, like Alan's story, is rich in variety and creativity.

I look forward to every episode of this podcast. The interviews give insight into the backstory of our industry through the people who have helped to build it. We are lucky here in Florida to have a deep history of agricultural influence and experience from which to draw. This podcast shines a light on the amazing personalities who have added their own brand of innovation and entrepreneurship to the growing industry. The host is warm and knowledgeable, bringing her own history with FNGLA and the guests. We all build our futures alongside and on the shoulders of these amazing individuals and I am thrilled that this podcast shares their stories. Keep sharing and I will keep listening!

You tell a lot of time is put into planning each episode. I appreciate the knowledgeable and interesting guests you always have on. My absolute favorite episode was the one on Disney and Katy Moss Warner. Wow! And a close second is the most recent episode on Interiorscape. I always look forward to this podcast as I know I will learn valuable information that will help me grow as a garden designer. I’m so glad to be a part of the FNGLA association. Thank you for all you do.
