BJ & Harmony Colangelo on SLEEPAWAY CAMP

BJ & Harmony Colangelo on SLEEPAWAY CAMP

Initially considered "just another slasher film" during its 1983 release, Sleepaway Camp has since emerged as a cult classic due to its talented young cast, remarkable practical effects, and notorious ending. But although the queer themes explored in its memorable final moments were initially intended to shock and unsettle audiences, Sleepaway Camp's empathetic portrayal of its unlikely killer sets it apart from other "trans panic" films of its time.

Together, BJ & Harmony Colangelo assess where Sleepaway Camp falls in the slasher canon and do a deep dive on the film's themes and legacy, exploring how changing attitudes towards the LGBT community has led to both a reclamation and necessary critique of the film by modern audiences.

Sleepaway Camp's divisive reputation has inspired a decades-long debate that changes alongside the attitudes and culture of its viewers. Through historical context, personal memoir, and film history, the Wives Colangelo explain what's kept audiences talking about Angela Baker and Camp Arawak after all these years.

    Rob Schneider and Peter Byck

    Rob Schneider and Peter Byck

Thank you for listening to the Following Films Podcast. Today I’m joined by actor Rob Schnider and director Peter Byck.

I had Rob on the show to discuss his latest film DEAD WRONG. The film is a story of greed, envy, sex, and murder. Centered on a narcissistic husband who is not satisfied with his life and wants more. He devises a psychotic, get-rich-quick scheme with his new, gambling-addicted attorney that ignites an emotional and deadly chain reaction. We also chat about Peter Bogdanovich, Orson Wells, Christopher Walken, Bruce Dern, and our shared love of physical media.

Then after the break I’m joined by director Peter Byck to discuss Roots So Deep (you can see the devil down there). Its a 4-part documentary series about inventive farmers and maverick scientists building a path to solving climate change with hooves, heart and soil. Can an underutilized way to graze cattle, that mimics the way bison once roamed the land, help get farmers out of debt, restore our depleted soils, rebuild wildlife habitat and draw down huge amounts of carbon? Cattle have been seen as eco-villains for a long time. What if they can help save us from catastrophic climate change?

DEAD WRONG and ROOTS SO DEEP are both available on VOD.

Jenna Kanell on FACELESS AFTER DARK and Courtney Dixon on DEPRESSION IS A BEAST

Jenna Kanell on FACELESS AFTER DARK and Courtney Dixon on DEPRESSION IS A BEAST

Thank you for listening to the Following Films Podcast. Today I’m joined by Jenna Kanell and Courtney Dixon.

I had Jenna on the show to discuss FACELESS AFTER DARK a film she co-wrote and stars in. Following her breakout success as the star of a killer clown horror flick, Bowie now finds herself struggling to capitalize on its success. But when she is suddenly held hostage by an unhinged fan posing as that same killer clown, horror becomes her reality as she fights to survive the night and escape before he completes his sinister plan to recreate the film’s fatal plot. Jenna Kanell from the TERRIFIER franchise gives a tour-de-force performance in this wild, gory ride.

Then after the break I’m joined by director Courtney Dixon to discuss her Tribeca entry DEPRESSION IS A BEAST. In the documentary film, Jenna Kanell, who typically battles evil forces in horror films confronts her darkest struggle, a real-life fight against depression.

FACELESS AFTER DARK will be in select theaters and on Digital Platforms on May 17th

DEPRESSION IS A BEAST will be screened next month at the Tribeca Film Festival

Host Chris brings on indie filmmakers, actors, writers, and others to interview them about projects they have worked/are working on. This is a great way to give voice to artists who don’t have as big of a platform as mainstream and/or big-budget movies and movie makers. On top of that, if you’re starved for new content, listening to this podcast can provide a long list of recommendations for your movie night. This is a pod that is accessible to long time film buffs and casual moviegoers alike.
