A Neighborly New Way to Grocery Shop: nabo

Subscribe on iTunes! Subscribe on Google Play Podcast RSS Feed   Community. Neighborly. These words are the genesis of why two Frisco locals created the nabo app. Meaning “neighbor” in Danish, nabo is a grocery app where neighbors can help each other by picking up items at their local store and dropping them off to one another. At the store and have a few extra minutes? Check and see if there’s anything a neighbor needs. At home and need just a few items? See if anyone on nabo can help you out while they’re at the store. Listen and enjoy as we explore a little more about how nabo services our community and our local nonprofits. SHOW NOTES: [00:23] What is nabo? [02:54] How is it different? [06:51] Who can use nabo? [09:56] Launch date and what’s next for nabo LINKS & RESOURCES: Nabo on Lifestyle Frisco | Website | Facebook: @nabodelivery  | Instagram: @nabodelivery Connect with Lifestyle Frisco on:  YouTube Facebook Instagram Twitter LinkedIn Transcript Machine-generated. Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host today, Kelly Walker. And we are talking to local business owners, Jim and Charith, about nabo. We’re going to learn what that means today. So welcome to the studio, guys. How are you? Great. Thank you so much for having us here, Kelly. We really appreciate it. Well, I know a little about nabo, but I don’t know if our audience knows everything. So I want to fill them in. The basics, I guess, is that Frisco has its own food technology startup. So tell us what that means, what it’s all about. Aboslutely, Kelly. Thanks for having us here. We, we love being here at Lifestyle Frisco’s office. So well, the first thing is we are a delivery app and nabo means neighbor in Danish. So true to the word. We are all about neighbors. We are about building stronger communities, building stronger neighborhoods. That’s what we’re about. Now, if you take yourself back to the start of the pandemic, one of the things that we actually saw were people going out of their way to help each other, you know, I, I personally reached out to folks who were quite early in our neighborhood and said, Hey, do you guys want something? And it was just not me. Everybody was reaching out to people at, Hey, how can we help you? Think about the pandemic. Think about the snowstorm. And these are not one-off events. We know that neighbors want to help each other, but there’s just nothing out there. When we actually looked at the market up, there are a lot of apps delivery apps, but they’re not focused towards communities. They’re all focused towards, uh, being a big economy, right? You order through the app, somebody comes and delivers at your door. They’re not transparent. The other day, in fact, I caught you a funny incident. Uh, my wife and I were talking and my wife said, Hey, uh, can you order something? That’s $5 or more from Kroger? And I said, why? She said, I want to get the bill above $35. So we don’t pay a delivery fee. And I was like, yeah, it’s crazy. You know? So, So we got talking together and we said, um, Jared, and I, we said, we need to bridge this gap. We need to bridge the gap and get something in the market. That’s for neighbors, for communities. And that’s how the Genesis of nabo began by trying to build a delivery app that can bridge neighbors who are at stores, buying something for them, themselves, and neighbors who are actually wanting something. So we’re at home needing help. Absolutely. We wanted to bridge that gap and that’s the Genesis of it. Which is such the neighborly way. Exactly. Unfortunately tend to lose that over time with, with schedules and just distance. And I don’t know, there’s something about the loss of that community neighbor feel sometimes. So I love the Genesis of this and that you’re, you’re, you’re bringing that back. L

Thank you for joining us today on the Frisco Podcast. Today, we’re talking to Alcyr Cohelio, the owner of Practical Fitness. We’ve had Alcyr on before, but we’re going to learn about some new things happening over at Practical Fitness. Welcome to the show, Alcyr. I’m glad to be here, Kelly. Very nice to talk to you. Yeah. So for those who, um, haven’t heard you talked to us before, tell us a little bit about what, you know, what’s Practical Fitness all about ’cause it is definitely not your average, you know, gym per se. So, it’s different. So, tell us what it is. Yeah. So, yeah, we are definitely not a gym. Uh, we like to say to people that we’re basically an extension of their home. Uh, when you come to see us, it’s a 100% private experience, very professional. Uh, we have a state of the art equipment and you only need to see us once or twice a week for 30 minutes. And we are hundred customized to you. It’s not like when you go to classes and you join a boot camp. When you come to us, the focus is only on you. Every single workout is customized to you to your goals. You can even pick your music. So, uh, it’s uh, yeah, it’s a 100% a private experience. You don’t, you know, assume that when someone’s walking in that they’re going to do the same workout as the person that came in before them, or that they need this or that, the same cookie cutter experience. You are going to meet with them and tailor what they need, specifically, for them. A hundred percent. So basically I, so the experience begins with a one-hour consultation and we do offer the one-hour consultation, a hundred percent free to have a conversation with us. And we pair that with a 30-minutes session for you so that you can experience what our clients experience. And those are in separate days. So you come for a one-hour conversation. We listen to you, listen to what, you know, what you like to, uh, to achieve. And one of the things that we try to explain to people and we are able to achieve, I would say that probably 60-70% of our clients stay with us for over five years. And we do have clients that are with us since we opened our door back in Austin in 2009. We still have several, I would probably say probably 40 to 50 clients in Austin that are with us for over 10 years. And that basically the same way we like to say the same way that you brush your teeth twice a day is the same thing for exercising. Our body needs to exercise. And one of the things that we emphasize as well, the exercise different than sports. Exercise is somethi

Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host Kelly Walker. We’re sitting with Frisco business owners, Ashley and Sean Green today. Welcome, Ashley and Sean, how are you? Hey, doing great. How are you? I’m good. I am excited to talk to you. I’ve talked to you before, usually in your store. So, this is fun, to get to kind of tell your story to our audience and learn even more about what’s going on with you guys. So before we get into the business side, can you just tell me a little about yourselves? And I mentioned your business owners. So, tell us about you guys. Yeah, sure. Well, um, Ashley and I are both from upstate New York, Rochester, New York. You know, grew up there, uh, went to school there. And we actually started dating when we were, uh, 19 years old. And, uh- just a couple of years ago. Just a couple of years ago. And, you know, if you’ve ever been to Rochester, beautiful place in the summertime, beautiful place. The winter time, yeah, not so much. Right. So we always wanted to live somewhere warm weather and a place that had a lot of opportunity. And we, we really fell in love with the idea of moving to Texas at a young age. And, uh, we, at 23 years old, we, we packed up our Penske truck. We drove from New York to Texas and we moved like somewhat on a whim. I was going to say, were there, were there career plans in at this time that, that brought you here at all, or you kind of got here and figure the rest out? We found jobs beforehand. And so we were able to get jobs beforehand. Uh, so we weren’t just, you know, living off the streets or anything, but we, we did find jobs. And we drove down here. In fact, uh, we originally tried to buy a house and it fell through. So we were set to move and we literally had no place to live. So I drove down with a friend and, uh, we found a place. And, uh, I remember looking at places, sending pictures to Ashley saying, “Hey, uh, you know, I found a place.” And she wasn’t even here. That’s hard. Yeah. So keep in mind, we’d been married for six months and now we’re about to purchase a home that I’ve never even seen before in a state that’s 1400 miles away. That’s trust and faith that it’s all gonna work out. And now that looking back, you also know: those things aren’t permanent either. You know, I mean, sometimes getting in the wrong place at the beginning helps, you know, where you do want to be. In different, you know, section of town or different town completely or whatever, you know? So while it feels like getting into your first homes are really, really, really major, they’re not permanent, you know. And that was kind of our whole mindset on the whole move, too. Is, “Hey, what’s the worst that’s going to happen? If we get there. And we don’t like it, we move again.” B

Hi, thank you so much for having us. You are very welcome. It’s our pleasure. So let me just back up at the beginning and just say it cannot be easy. We hear about TEDx all the time. It’s a very big deal. It’s all over the country, the world. How does a school in Frisco, Texas get to host a TEDx? It can’t be easy. Are there a lot of rules requirements? How did this happen? Uh, yeah, definitely a lot of rules and requirements. Uh, last year was our first year. And, uh, it really just starTED with a brainstorm, uh, about how some of us were doing little mini, uh, sort of fake TED talks in our classroom. You know, just, just to kind of make the presentations seem more fun. And just one day I thought, “wait a second, why are we doing fake TED talks? Let’s do a real one?” And so we just went to TED.com and we looked up the requirements and submitted an application. And really within 30 days they approved the application and we were in, Oh my goodness. Well, they must’ve been impressed because I, again, there’s there must receive a lot of applications really, but it’s special when there are students involved. That’s that changes everything. How all of we adults think we have a million great things to say, but when it’s kids, that’s better. I want to know what they have- Shania’s noddi

Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host, Nicole Barron. Today, I get to chat with the lovely Ann Anderson, who is one of our longest standing clients and friends. We always enjoy catching up with Ann because not only is she a good friend, but she educates us about a lot of things we never thought of and really need to know. So, Ann, welcome. Thank you. Good to be here. Glad to have you back. Ann is always on alert for us. She’s an advocate to many members of our community. She’s studies listens, learns what’s happening in the insurance arena so that we can be prepared for anything. And she’s walked alongside a lot of clients who had unforeseen circumstances, crazy things go on, and I’m sure she’s learned a lot so that she can then carry that knowledge onto the next client. So, Ann’s just a wealth of information. She’s also, um, a parent and a wife and living the small-business-owner life. So she’s just got all kinds of angles from which to fill us with knowledge. So, Ann, thank you. Thank you again. You know what I think we should start with? The big freeze. Yes, exactly. There were a lot of fun names that went around for the, uh, craziness that was February, 2021. And, um, you know, everything from of course, floods to repairs to, um, just having to hire contractors. There’s so much there to unpack probably in terms of, um, what do we need to know to be prepared for something like that, that we just think, “nah, that’ll never happen.” So I know that’s a whole lot there, but just what are your top tips about that kind of thing? What do we need to know? You’re so right. There’s so much. And we never thought, right? I don’t think, you know, we have friends in the North and they’re like, “how do you not have electricity?” Or “why are the pipes breaking?” You know? And I’m like, “because we don’t dig below the freeze line” and things like that, that are conversations we don’t have in Texas. However, they never water their foundations either. So it goes both ways. But yeah, that freeze who- I mean, it was a hard freeze, right? We talk about it, but it was multiple days under freezing temperatures, very low temperatures. So that puts stress on your home, your plans. How many people are replacing bushes around their homes now because the, um, their Indian Hawthorn is all dead or whatever? But the biggest thing, of course, in the end, the worst thing you want is when you have a pipe break. So we, um, we’ve s

And do we have to start on the gourmet coffee? I don’t think so. It’s to die for. Best coffee, oh my gosh. It’s so good. That’s so fun because that’s the thing that I don’t think everybody realizes, except those that have taken the time to come visit and join our loyal visitors. They may not know that there’s food. You can go and sit and walk around and actually have a meal. You’re not just going to buy, produce. The produce is awesome. Exactly. There’s so much more. Can you give a shout out to some of your specific vendors? I know you love them all. They’re all valuable to you, but like who’s kind of there that’s unique that we may be like, “Whoa, really? I’ve never heard about that. That’s fun.” You just named some of the incredible products. Oh my gosh. Uh, yeah. I mean, Yiayia’s Coffeehouse and, uh, Yia Yi

Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host Scott Ellis. This week, we’re talking again to Kevin Carswell, the owner of Mochas & Javas, uh, a favorite coffee shop location here in Frisco, located at the corner of Legacy and Eldorado, that is, on the southeast corner of Legacy and Eldorado. Yeah. So I was thinking in my head, but yes, that was correct. Yeah. I always have to, I’m looking at it from the opposite direction. So I also have to turn the map in my head and make sure I get that right. But, uh, welcome to the show and thanks for joining us again. Thanks for having me. I really enjoy it. Enjoy what you guys do up there in Frisco for us Appreciate it. So yes, thank you very much. And we love supporting the local businesses as much as we can, yours included, but you’re not in Frisco at the moment. It sounds like you’re, uh, probably down in San Marcos, I’m in San Marcos, um, was up in Frisco last week, just overseeing operations. Things are running very well through. We have a really good team in place right now and things they’re really happy with, with our, um, staff up there. We’re still hiring. Uh, I think that’s something that I think every business Frisco seems to be doing, especially in the restaurant industry is hiring all the time. So we’re open to UNT campus comes online here. Eventually allow us a little bit more staffing for the hours that we need which is typically 8 to 5, 6 to 5, Monday to Fridays. But, uh, it’s we enjoy, uh, the Frisco area very much it nice to be up there. And it’s, um, I was telling my daughter, we did, um, doing more t-shirts um, and my daughter and one of our staff are doing more of the designs and she does a great job of design. So they’re just more solid after- the nice thing is the thing that I’ve noticed. The last been there three and a half years now, the nice thing I’ve noticed the last 12 months is more of our customer are buying our shirts and our tumblers cause they have funny bought into our brand up there, which is really nice. Well that’s good. You guys do have a solid brand and I will say you have, I’ve always noticed that you have an excellent staff in the Frisco location. Um, we’re always very friendly, very knowledgeable. Um, they’re really good at remembering people’s faces and drinks. I’ve just always been impressed by the folks you’ve had in there. You guys are doing a great job. So with that said, as you mentioned, uh, you know, we’re in a time when people are, you know, especially restaurants are always hiring, but, uh, right now things have been a little up and down for a lot of folks in your business. How are you guys handling? How has business been, I should say amongst or amids the, uh, the COVID pandemic? Initially. I mean, initially when it first started and right at spring break, pretty devastating, especially in San Marcos, we’re next to Texas State University. It happened, it started on spring break the first spring, a week of spring break, and everyone already had plans to go somewhere else for spring breaks. They all left, went home and 38,000 students never returned. Yeah, that’s, that’s brutal Plus staff and everybody else. So with, uh, we had a greater impact, uh, and a longer impact in San Marcos

Welcome to the Frisco Podcast. I’m your host, Scott Ellis. And in this episode, we are chatting with Sandy Tutwiler from Tutor Doctor. Sandy, welcome to the show. Thank you. Thanks for having us. You bet. It’s good to have you here. And I think this is a very timely opportunity to chat with you about tutoring, the needs of students and all those things that are kind of happening in the age of COVID that have parents concerned, worked up, uh, trying to figure out what the best answer for their, their child, maybe. So before we get into all of that, um, tell us a little bit about Tutor Doctor and how you got started in doing this business. Tutor Doctor’s been around globally for about 20 years. Um, we tutor all over the world. Um, there are about 350 franchises all over the world and we are here in the United States and actually here Frisco-McKinney. Um, we’ve been in the area for about 10 years. And so we’ve been partnering with the Frisco and McKinney schools, primarily, for the last 10 years, um, offering one-on-one private tutoring solutions for kids primarily, um, K-12. Okay. So K-12, you covered the pretty much the whole gauntlet of school there. So you say you’ve been in the Frisco-McKinney area for about 10 years. And is it all one-on-one tutoring or do you have any group tutoring? How does, what kind of, what, tell us about the services you offer and what parents can expect if they come to work with you guys? We started out one-on-one tutoring and that’s been the bread and butter for the last book of, of the tutoring years, um, or the- while we’ve been in business. Um, we started group tutoring and group tutoring really came about in the year of COVID and pandemic where we would offer families who wanted to do social learning, or they wanted to take the virtual learning options that were offered in school and really condense them to smaller groups and, and offer the option of reteaching lessons that were offered in the school virtually or even doing homeschooling options for some children, but with the social aspect tied in. So we do do some group tutoring, but we asked families to form their own groups because we don’t want to be responsible for bringing people together that may not mesh well or may not, you know, be in the same circle of especially now, um, they’re kind of their pandemic circles, their quarantine circles. Um, and that’s worked out really well for us. So we do offer group tutoring had in the past more so now than ever before. Okay. Yeah. That makes a lot of sense. Is, is everything purely online right now or are you doing some in-person tutoring as well? We are actually doing about 85% of the tutoring that we’re doing is actually in person. Only about 15% is online, which is remarkable considering where we’ve come. In March, we went 100% online.
