Good potential, unfulfilled

Low quality by ostensibly smart people who have not bothered to put any effort into putting together a decent podcast. The voice of the introductory and closing narrator/host makes your ears bleed — iris shockingly horrific. Then I have to listen to a reporter, an actual journalist, repeatedly pronounce the word “nuclear” as “nukular”. Again, shockingly bad. The whole thing is generally terrible, and the tragedy is that it could so easily be good, if anyone cared.

Great content lost to low production values

The FT is one of the best newspapers in the world. Its journalists are smart and incisive, and its editors set high standards of quality throughout. It’s no surprise the content of this podcast is topnotch.

Unfortunately, it gets lost in the delivery. The sound quality is consistently poor; like the podcasts have been recorded using the voice memo app using an in-built microphone in an echoey conference room. The constant shuffling of papers in the foreground of the recording only adds to the amateurish feel of the podcast.

Relying on the journalists themselves to read their own work sounds like a good idea “on paper”. Unfortunately, delivering an engaging listening experience requires much different skills than writing successfully. I’ve listened (through gritted teeth) to six or seven articles, and it was hard to get past the monotonous drone of the reading.

The FT obviously has the resources to deliver a much better product than this. It’s time to take a page off the Guardian’s playbook, as their Guardian Long Reads Podcast is an absolute delight of smart, beautifully delivered content.

Amateurs

The podcast was clearly a rough draft as the boring monotone speaker repeated many lines and could be heard shuffling papers.
