G&R Episode 85: It's May Day, with Scott and Bob‪!‬ Green & Red: Podcasts for Scrappy Radicals

    • Politics

Throughout the world (but not in the U.S.) May 1st is International Workers' Day, so Scott and Bob had a discussion on the radical origins of "Labor Day" as a Socialist celebration of the working class.  We talked about the nature of Labor in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, the various strategies used by the capitalists to crush and oppress workers, and the way workers responded.  We talked about the role of radicals and especially anarchists in the early days of the labor movement in America.

We got into the differences between "May Day" and the federal holiday in September known as "Labor Day."  And how one is a symbol of radical organizing and how the other is symbol of preventing radical organizing and enforcing loyalty.  Finally we discussed the frequent hostility of Liberals to radical activists and the more recent clash between wokeness and radical politics.

We closed out this episode with Florence Reese singing "Which Side Are You On." Solidarity to all the comrades out there in the streets and communities building a better world!
