    The Advent of Hope (Genesis 3.20-24)

    Here we now come to realize that Genesis 3 is the first gospel message; the first promise that God will rescue it and that He will finish it. While the first sin brought all humanity under judgment, God did not hesitate to promise redemption and reconciliation. This Gospel Hope is fulfilled in the person of Jesus, foretold there in the Garden of Eden.

    Response and Consequence (Genesis 3.7-19)

    When the Lord God called to the man, "Where are you?" (Gen. 3:9), it should cause us stop and take note. The question, "where are you?" is given so that we will realize just where WE are. The shame resulting from sin often drives us to pull away and to try to hide from God. But He knows, and yet He seeks us out so that He may restore us.

    Temptation and Fall (Genesis 3.1-6)

    Here in Genesis 3, in the story of Adam and Eve, the serpent and the fall, we learn that the world's greatest problem is human sin. We are tempted to blame the serpent for deceiving Eve; or to blame God for allowing the serpent entry to the Garden. But Genesis 3 places the emphasis on humanity's failure. How does this happen? And how are we to respond?

    Marriage and the Gospel (Genesis 2.18-25)

    Having declared all creation "good" in Genesis 1, God now says, "It is NOT good for the man to be alone" (2:18). God resolved to make the woman so that mankind could live and thrive on earth. On another level however, the narrative points to God's faithfulness to His people, and to the final consummation of all things in accordance with His will.

    Work and Rest, Pt. 2 (Genesis 2.1-15)

    In looking at Genesis 2, we see the foundation laid for Sabbath rest in the lives of God's people. His provision of this holy rest bears implications that relate to our need for physical refreshment and renewal. Likewise, the Sabbath attends to our our spiritual and emotional needs as well.

    Work and Rest, Pt. 1 (Genesis 1.27–2.2; 2.7-9, 15)

    God's blessing over His image-bearers (Genesis 1:28) contains three imperatives: to (1) Fill ; (2) Subdue; and to (3) Rule over the earth. Before the Fall, God established humanity within Creation, "to work and to take care of it" (2:15). How should this understanding shape our view of work? Is work an evil to be saved from? Or rather, a blessing that we have been given?

    The Temple of God (Genesis 1.27–2.3)

    Here at the hinge point between Genesis 1-2 we see that God has made all of creation, bringing into being light, time, place, vegetation and all animals, and humanity. Woven into the story we find God's central purpose—to establish a functioning, suitable home so that He may dwell there with and for His people.

    Made For Relationship (Genesis 1.24-28)

    "And God said, 'Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness" (Genesis 1:26, NIV). When we consider God's communal nature—three Persons in one divine Essence—and also His decision to create humankind in His own image, we will begin to realize that we have been made for relationship and community.
