Hawaii's experience integrating large amounts of renewable energy into its power system has been described as a "postcard from the future". The island state has some of the most aggressive renewable integration targets in the U.S. Because Hawaii's grid is literally "islanded" it can't rely on surrounding grids if there's a disruption to power on the system to prevent blackouts.
