"What's interesting about balance is--when you're in the creative zone--you wanna really protect yourself against distractions. Allow it to flow."
"I've also learned to recognize when I'm not in the zone. It's time to push away--go do something else."
How African Americans push themselves: "It's ingrained in us as children that you have to be 5, 6 or 7 times as good. You start to apply the need to prove yourself, the need to show that you are worthy, that you have value, that you're trying to do the right thing. It bleeds into everything you do."
Why younger women have a perspective advantage on keeping balance better than most women in mid-life.
"A little narcissism is healthy. Putting yourself first is not selfish. Put self first so you can be there for others."
"It's an integral part of your overall health and wellness to understand that taking care of yourself and loving yourself isn't about being selfish or even narcissist[ic] at all.
"It's about loving everyone around you enough to know that you have to take the time for yourself so you can be there and continue to be the role model for so many people who depend on you."
The one thing women can do to increase their wellness: "Give yourself permission to breathe. It's okay to take a deep breath."
