Why Is It So Hard To Ask For Help?
Today Michele and I have a heart to heart discussion about why it's so darn hard to ask for help. Why is that?
Is this a fairly new phenomenon or something that's been around for a long time but we're just now talking about it?
Could it be cultural?
No matter what the reasons there seem to be many reasons why it's so hard to ask for help!!!
Clinical psychologist, Dr. Ellen Hendriksen states that "Asking for help can turn the most self-assured, square-shouldered among us into a nail-biting mess. We may cast about vague wishes to no one in particular, blame others for our woes, or procrastinate until our problem has become an emergency. You’d think asking for help would be preferable to all this misery, but taking action is tough for almost everyone."
Why is that?
Some of the things we discussed are:
People love to help others! We fear to admit that we're out of control. Maybe you'll fear of being indebted or owing a favor? Do you fear to look weak? Maybe you are afraid of rejection... We have such an interesting discussion for you today!!!
Loved listening to the stories you facilitate of women's health and healing journeys! Being a guest was extra special. Thanks so much for the opportunity and for the work you do for women. Lisa Paladino CNM
I have been listening to Maureen Lake’s podcasts this winter. They are so inspirational. I love hearing the stories of women doing amazing things. Most of the women have faced major life challenges that led to their healing journeys. It is so interesting to hear how they turned it around.
I also love the weekly talks with Michele Schwitzky. They cover so many topics and during the first talk, I realized that I am not alone in feeling exhausted so much of the time. The sleep challenge is really helping me and I am looking forward to future challenges.
A personal experience with Maureen
My families personal experience with Maureen goes years back when she helped diagnose our daughter with her dyslexia.
After years of being told our daughter is “sweet and beautiful” and “we don’t need to worry about her not learning her math facts or how to tell time, because she is a diligent worker and she would be okay.”
Maureen stepped in and after working with our daughter for several meetings she quickly alerted us about her disability and how she could help her bridge the disconnections in her brain and essentially heal her learning disability.
Our daughter is a freshman at the University of Colorado now and thriving.
My most important memory in working with Maureen was how she actually “listened” to us. She looked deeper into our concerns and she took the time to care about all of us. Her deep desire to “heal” our daughter is exactly who Maureen is and this podcast and book couldn’t be written and provided by someone more qualified.
I’m excited to continue the journey with you, again!
