Character, culture, and community - to win an NCAA Championship? UMass hockey coach Greg Carvel shares his keys to success For Greg Carvel, Head Coach of the NCAA Championship hockey team at UMass, the math for creating a high-performance team is simple: People provide character, character creates culture, and culture wins championships. Coach Carvel joined Willy Walker on the Walker Webcast to share how he took one of the worst programs in the country and made it the best, what did he do to recruit top talent, and how he is able to stay on top with so many players heading to the NHL. Greg begins by discussing how culture is critical to style, and he stresses the importance of being humble and letting others praise your virtues. More details from the discussion include: • At the 7 minute mark, he shares his experience on the “journey from worst to first” and how he persevered when Covid infiltrated their team before the national semi-final game. • His leadership style is notable (13 minute mark). He highlights that leadership trickles down an organization so it is critical to have “clarity of vision” that is articulated in a way so that others believe it. • Carvel shares what he looks for when recruiting (15 minute mark) and how he prioritizes character over the players’ hockey skills. • At the 17 minute mark, tune in to hear about the UMass hockey team’s core values and why connections are the most important of the five tenets: integrity, commitment, compete, connection, and unity. Carvel attributes their success as a team to the character of each individual team member. Further, he reminds us that it is important for leaders to remember they are never too big to do the little things. • At the 36 minute mark, Carvel shares the special ingredient that sets their team apart: behavior. He discusses why it is critical to create a common purpose, which was especially important when the team was stuck in a rut. • Lastly, he highlights how being authentic and vulnerable shaped their team culture. Notably, he says forming connections starts with being one’s true self. (41 minute mark) • At the 51 minute mark, Carvel takes questions from the audience. • At the 56 minute mark, Walker & Dunlop Chairman and CEO Willy Walker shares his closing remarks. Listen now!
