Growing Up Bookish is a podcast where friends Emma & Allison reread our favorite books from our childhood and teen years. Are these books as good as we remember? Do they hold up to our discerning grown-up tastes? We are on a mission to find out!
We'll read books of all genres from fantasy, thrillers, to general young adult fiction.
Episode 33: Ida Early Comes over the Mountain by Robert Burch
This week we take on a "heartwarming tale about the Great Depression" called Ida Early Comes Over the Mountain. The cover calls it a "Mountain Mary Poppins" but is that REALLY how it is?
Episode 32: Dark Visions: The Strange Power by LJ Smith
Psychics, romance, bad boys, an evil plan... this series has it all! We take on another of LJ Smith's famous paranormal romance trilogies: Dark Visions!
Episode 31: The Worst Witch (1986)
It's Halloween at last! We're ending this spooky month with a movie centered around the wizarding school that started it all - The Worst Witch! This was a favorite childhood movie for both of us and started our life long crush of Tim Curry. Did YOU watch this movie?
Episode 30: The Watcher in the Woods (1980)
What child of the 80s didn't have the crap scared out of them with this movie? But is it as scary as we remember? And what the heck actually happened at the end anyways? This week, we dive into this 1980 Disney classic film: The Watcher in the Woods!
Episode 29: Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz
It's Halloween and we're taking on the classic Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. This book is iconic! Everyone we knew was reading it in the 90s and we all have fond memories of it scaring the pants off of us. Are the stories as scary as we remember?
Episode 28: The Carnival Ghost (Sweet Valley Twins Super Chillers #3) by Francine Pascal
It's Halloween and we've returned to the world of Sweet Valley Twins with one of the Super Chillers! The Carnival Ghost was Allison's favorite of the Super Chillers, but will Emma like it as much as she liked Magic Christmas?
Amazing analysis as you guide us through each work! What’s next for us!?!
The book club I didn’t know I needed
I didn’t think I’d care about the content of this podcast. Young Adult books aren’t really my thing, but somehow the humor and thoughtfulness of the hosts have made this into the most entertaining content. I blew through the first three episodes and I’m patiently awaiting episode 4. READ FASTER LADIES, I NEED NEW CONTENT.
Hilarious and awesome
Emma and Allison are super fun to listen to! I’m not into YA fiction but I was on the edge of my seat for 1 & 2 due to their story telling and humor while reviewing the first book. Love it - I feel like they could talk about any book and it would be hilarious. Looking forward to #3!
