    Ep 17: The Xenon Codex

    Ep 17: The Xenon Codex

And so, with the `Chronicle of the Black Sword finally concluded, Hawkwind end the 1980's with The Xenon Codex, and so Hawkbinge brings the curtain crashing down on season 2 with a deep dive into this enigmatic little gem.

As ever, we look at the music landscape of 1988 (Rick Astley "Never Gonna Give You Up" best single at the '88 Brit Awards... yes, that's where we are). We also have a rather special piece of cover art to dive into, and a tour programme from that "mad professor's laboratory" tour that followed.

Also, we bring the 80's to an end by publishing vol.5 of the Hawkbinge Sessions Playlist on Spotify (links below), including Matt's and Andy's turntable picks from this very episode.

    Enjoy.

    Ep 16: Live Chronicles

    Ep 16: Live Chronicles

A "Live Chronicles" bonus special episode, with a very special guest...

You can't really talk about "Chronicle of the Black Sword" without talking about "Live Chronicles", the live record of the tour that brought all of Hawkwind's Moorcock-inspired furore to the stage, with dancers, sword fights, readings (occasionally from the man himself), and more sword fights. One of the best tours ever?  Hawkwind's 'Spinal Tap' moment?  Bit of both? You decide...

We are duly honoured to spend a couple of hours in the company of none other than Mr Ian Abrahams, of "Sonic Assassins" book fame, to chat about a tour both he and Andy saw for reals. We get the sounds, the sights, and the smells of a fantasy/space rock band on the road. But enough o' my yackin', let's rock...

Ep 15: Chronicle of the Black Sword

ELRIC: Arioch! Aide me in my hour of need!
ARIOCH: I am here, what dost thou wishest?
    ELRIC: I wishest for HAWKBINGE!!!

And here it is! Finally! Episode 15, “Chronicle of the Black Sword”, a full 2.5+ hours of swords, sorcery and rock n’ roll, in which Matt gets introduced to Elric of Melniboné, the Eternal Champion and the multiverse according to Michael Moorcock.  We also talk Earth Ritual, Hawkfest, ‘Silver Mr. Sheen’, the big music of 1985 and the travesty that is Hawkwind’s omission from Live Aid. Plus, we remember the one and only Nik Turner, RIP.

    Ep 14: Choose Your Masques

    Ep 14: Choose Your Masques

It's a monster 2 hours of Hawkbinge this time around - Matt has chosen his masque, which side will he be on? Find out here, as Hawkbinge deep dives into 1982’s Choose Your Masques…
As ever, we look at what was going in the music world in 1982 and take stock of where the band is at. Matt gives his considered response to the album and he and Andy go through it in depth. They also check out the artwork and take a look at the expanded double album reissue, and consider The Return of Silver Machine. The turntable selections this time around also mean that volume 4 of the Hawkbinge Sessions playlist is now complete and released on Spotify, featuring Matt’s picks from the last Levitation, Sonic Attack, Church of Hawkwind and Choose Your Masques alongside the music that he and Andy have been listening to over the past few months.
Remember: if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it… if you want to get into it, you’ve got to get out of it…[…]

Future Past

Great show guys.
I like listening to the two of you and your takes on Hawkwind’s music from an old fan and a new student.
I have followed them, starting in the early 1980s, when I found out Lemmy was in the band before Motörhead.
My first album was Space Ritual, and I have been a big fan ever since.
Thank you and Onward you go!
