Pain! Why we hurt and what we can do (Dr. Adriaan Louw - #237)

Pain! Why we hurt and what we can do (Dr. Adriaan Louw - #237)

If you grew up a fan of the Rocky films, you’ll no doubt remember the classic scene in Rocky III when Clubber Lane  (Mr. T) is asked his prediction for the match against Rocky. He glares into the camera and gives a single word answer: “Pain.”
He was talking about the boxing match, but he could have been speaking about life. Pain is universal. For some, it may play a beneficial role – nudging us in a different direction before we create more of it. For others, it may rise to the level of dominating our thoughts and affecting our every decision on a day to day basis. But maybe there’s a different way to approach pain that could change it’s influence forever.
Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is Dr. Adriaan Louw, one of the world’s foremost expert on pain neuroscience and the integration of PNE – or Pain Neuroscience Education, which may be a key for those looking to break through the barriers pain and chronic pain has brought to daily life, physical pursuits and more. Dr. Louw is an adjunct faculty member for multiple universities, has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed articles on the subject and is the Director of the Therapeutic Neuroscience Research Group.

Time in Nature's Impact On Wellbeing (Dr. Jay Maddock - #236)

Time in Nature's Impact On Wellbeing (Dr. Jay Maddock - #236)

Over the past century, we have shifted from 50% of the population living in rural areas to less than 17%. Over 50% of us spend more than a TOTAL of 5 hours each week outside, with a large % of that group totaling less than 3 hours/week. Does it matter? Yes – and with each passing year, the research is bringing more data about WHY it matters to the forefront. Our guest today is on the cutting edge of that research.
Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is Professor Jay Maddock from the school of public health at Texas A&M University to go along with honorary professorships at two universities in China. He is co-director of the center for health & nature, former Chair of the Hawaii State board of health and former president of the American Academy of Health Behavior.

Breath: New Science of a Lost Art (#235 - James Nestor Hidden Gem)

Breath: New Science of a Lost Art (#235 - James Nestor Hidden Gem)

Breathing. It’s so simple that unless we’re struggling through an asthma attack or drowning, it never even crosses our minds. But what if we’re doing it wrong? No- seriously – what if developing some simple changes to the way in which we breath could improve our health, our energy levels and our outcomes across various aspects of life?
Welcome to the latest episode of the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Today’s guest is James Nestor, journalist and best-selling author of the book that surprised even him - Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art. We’ll discuss his intriguing journey to examine the history of how the human species has lost the ability to breathe properly and why we’re suffering from a laundry list of maladies—snoring, sleep apnea, asthma, autoimmune disease, allergies—because of it. And of course, we’ll talk about what this means for our lives based on the evidence, not simply headlines.

Mastering PREtirement: Key Strategies From Our 20s Through Our 60s (Episode #233)

Mastering PREtirement: Key Strategies From Our 20s Through Our 60s (Episode #233)

Are you planning to retire someday? Maybe that “someday” is decades away. Maybe it’s later this year. Regardless of your timeline, this special episode could potentially be among the most important we’ve ever released in terms of impact on the lives and future lives of you and those in your inner circle. In 1960, if you made it to age 65, you could expect to live another 13 years. Today, 1 in 7 of us will live past age 95, meaning we might spend 30 or more years in retirement. Are you going to be ready – not just financially – but in all key aspects of life?
I’m Dr. Brad Cooper and this episode will dig into a concept you’ve likely never even heard of but will soon be glad you did. We’re going to discuss the ins and outs of Mastering PREtirement. Wait – what? PREtirement? What is PREtirement? From friends and peers to coaching clients and even parents, we’re going to address the key steps, starting with our 20’s and working up to our 60’s, that will help us not only make the most of our post-working life, but also enhance each phase along the way. And yes, money will enter our discussion, but the primary purpose of this episode will be to go further – to uncover ways in which we can truly live fully during our final act – not simply accumulate the funds to avoid working.
For specific advice or guidance regarding financial matters, you can contact Colby Ripsam, the financial advisor and investment management analyst mentioned in this episode via email Colby.Ripsam@lpl.com or (970) 800-3432.

Unlocking a Life of Limitless Possibilities: Colin O'Brady (#232)

Unlocking a Life of Limitless Possibilities: Colin O'Brady (#232)

I’ve read a lot of bios preparing for the 230+ episodes of this show. They’re all impressive and they set the stage, providing the credibility surrounding their insights. But today’s guest is the first person who’s bio made me look for the “just kidding – obviously no single person could do all of those things” note at the bottom. But there was nothing of the sort. Hold onto your hats folks – we’re in for a crazy ride today
Welcome to the Catalyst Health, Wellness & Performance Coaching Podcast. Our guest today is Colin O’Brady. After college, an exciting adventure in Thailand took a turn for the worse. He suffered burns across 25% of his body and doctors said he would be unlikely to walk normally again. They were right – he didn’t walk normally again. Instead, he became a professional triathlete, the first person to complete a solo crossing of the Antarctica, set 10 world records, write a NY Times best-selling book and start a non-profit for kids. We’ll obviously spend some time discussing some of the highlights, but more importantly, we’ll be talking about YOUR adventure – your dreams – and what you can do to bring them to fruition. For more information about Colin and the 12 Hour Walk project, please visit https://www.colinobrady.com/12hourwalk

Great info and more than just a podcast for coaches

Dr. Coopers podcast has been great in helping me though a major injury and now the recovery process. Topics like preparing for surgery to mental toughness and nutrition have all been beneficial.

I’ve specifically been diving into the concept of mental toughness for a while now. How to become stronger mentally and having the ability to practically apply it. Dr. Coopers unique approach to mental toughness has really intrigued me. It’s not just about grinding yourself into the dirt everyday. He has also been great in taking the discussion further with questions and thoughts I’ve has about it.

I’ve also enjoyed fun interviews with pro’s like Craig Alexender and Chrissie Wellington.
