How Rap And Real Emotion Become Healing Tools, with Ashton Stevens

Send us Fan Mail A song has never “just played” in the background. At the right moment, a single line can crack open something you’ve been carrying for years, and suddenly you’re breathing deeper than you have in weeks. That’s the kind of listening we’re talking about here, where music becomes a mental health tool instead of simple entertainment.  We’re joined by artist and songwriter Ashton Stevens, whose work sits at the intersection of vulnerability and strength. Together, we dig into the misconception that healing music must sound soft and gentle, and why rap and hip hop can be deeply healing precisely because they make room for the full range of emotion. We also draw a hard line between comfort and healing, naming how comfort can numb while healing can feel raw, exposing, and real.  Aston opens up about the internal battles he returns to as a writer, especially self-doubt, inconsistency, and the long shadow of trauma. We talk about what it looks like to hold softness and resilience at the same time, how to tell the truth without exploiting other people’s stories, and how listeners who aren’t artists can still use music like a practice: finding the songs that won’t leave you alone, studying lyrics, and borrowing perspective when your own feels stuck. We close with the routines that keep him grounded year after year, from journaling and meditation to stepping away from noise and simply living when the next song won’t come.  If something here lands, share it with one person who needs it, and subscribe so you don’t miss what’s next. If you have a minute, leave a review and tell us the one song that has carried you lately. How To Witness Trauma Without Losing Yourself, with David Small

Send us Fan Mail Trauma isn’t only what happens to you. Sometimes it’s what happens inside you when you keep witnessing the unbearable and still decide to serve. I’m joined by David Small, who has spent the last decade working alongside the Burma Rangers in Myanmar’s long-running civil war, and who recently wrote *Nameless Faceless People* about that journey. We get honest about what repeated exposure to violence, displacement, and loss does to the mind and body, especially when you voluntarily step into a conflict zone.  We talk about why “trauma” can feel like a buzzword in the West, and how that cultural noise can make it harder to admit the real thing. David offers a clear lens: trauma grows when an experience is both overwhelming and out of your control. He shares a simple daily check-in question he used with his team, plus the “backpack of rocks” metaphor for how stress and grief accumulate quietly until you feel stuck, numb, or exhausted.  From there, we move into grief that comes in waves, the role of purpose and calling, and the reality of coping behaviours like alcohol dependency among young soldiers and displaced students. David also shares what he’s learned running the Jungle Discipleship School, including a powerful link between nutrition, food security, and mental health: when students know they’ll eat tomorrow, they can finally start dreaming about next year. We close with practical hope through community, counselling, and Internal Family Systems ideas about welcoming every part of ourselves without losing our way.  If this conversation helps you name what you’re carrying, subscribe, share it with someone who needs it, and leave a review so more listeners can find it. What If Your Job Is Not Your Identity - Katie Jean Hadiaris on Healing Workplace Trauma

Send us Fan Mail “We’re a family here” can feel like the warmest promise a job can make, until the day you realise the loyalty only flows one way. We sit down with Katie Jean Hadiaris, ICF-certified somatic and trauma-informed coach and the founder of Work Is Not Family, to talk about what happens when workplace culture blurs boundaries and your body starts sounding the alarm. If you’ve ever felt emotionally activated at work, consumed by urgency, or quietly ashamed that you “can’t handle it,” this conversation gives you language and a path forward. We dig into the real cost of confusing connection with commitment. Katie shares how a moment of dismissal from leadership triggered a much older wound, and why institutional betrayal can land in the nervous system with the force of a past trauma. From an HR and corporate leadership lens, we also name the truth many people avoid: work is built for labor, not love. Employers optimise for output, and when we look to our job to meet our emotional needs, we set ourselves up to feel trapped, unseen, and overextended. Then we get practical about workplace mental health, nervous system regulation, and sustainable boundaries. We unpack neurosception, the brain’s constant threat scanning, and how high performers often succeed through survival strategies like people pleasing, hyper-responsibility, or becoming the constant problem solver. We also challenge the popular advice to “just quit,” because patterns can follow you if you never address what’s driving them, while still acknowledging that some workplaces are truly abusive and leaving is the healthiest choice. If you want a healthier relationship with work without losing yourself in it, listen now, share it with someone who needs it, and subscribe and leave a review so more people can find these conversations. How Childhood Voices Become Your Inner Critic, with Mary Beth Fox

Send us Fan Mail That sentence you never remember learning can still run your whole life: “I’m not good enough.” It can look like perfectionism, people pleasing, overexplaining, staying “nice,” or feeling guilty for needing rest and support. We sit down with Mary Beth Fox, an inner child therapist, to trace how that story takes root in childhood and quietly becomes an adult identity, even when everything looks “fine” from the outside. We dig into what the inner critic really is: not a personality trait, but a collection of borrowed voices from family, culture, school, and society. Mary Beth shares a grounded way to start untangling it, especially when you can’t catch it in the moment. After the wave passes, you replay the script, ask “Where did that come from?” and “Whose voice is that?” then practice turning toward your true voice and true self-worth. We also talk about the slower, subtler wounds emotional neglect, conditional love, criticism and comparison and how they grow into adult anxiety and chronic self-doubt. If you’ve ever had a stressful week and felt like all your progress vanished, this conversation reframes it: healing can never be lost. When the old voice returns, it’s not proof you failed it can be a signal that a younger part of you needs attention, safety, and a new response. Listen for practical inner child healing steps, identity work that goes deeper than affirmations, and a reminder you can come back to any day: you were always enough. If this resonates, share the episode with a friend, follow the show, and leave a review so more people can find it and start turning down the volume on the voice that was never theirs. How To Heal When Time Is Not Enough, with Pearly Montagu

Send us Fan Mail Grief is often treated like a tunnel you crawl through until you reach “normal” again. We don’t buy that story. When loss hits, something real happens in the body, the mind, and the way you make meaning and if you ignore those layers, time alone won’t necessarily heal you.  I’m joined by health and wellness advocate  Pearly Montagu, who shares how her own grief and healing journey turned into a deep commitment to helping others transform pain into purpose. We talk about surrender as a day to day practice, why trauma can feel stored in the nervous system, and how modern life has stripped away the rituals that once helped communities process sorrow. We also name a quiet reality many people live with: being surrounded by love while still feeling deeply misunderstood.  From there, we get practical. We dig into mental health tools that are simple, accessible, and surprisingly powerful: exercise to shift your physiological state, gratitude practices in the morning and at night, cold exposure for resilience, and small somatic resets like shaking out the body. We also touch on gut health, nutrition, and taking agency in a food system that doesn’t always prioritise wellbeing, plus why community support matters so much when healing feels nonlinear.  If you’re carrying grief, anxiety, or lingering trauma and you’re worried you’re “doing it wrong,” this conversation offers both perspective and grounded next steps. What If Freedom Starts With Admitting It, with Amanda J Scott

Send us Fan Mail If you’ve ever wondered, “Is it really abuse if there are no bruises?” this conversation answers with compassion and clarity. I’m joined by kinesiologist, author, and survivor Amanda J. Scott, who spent 17 years in an emotionally and financially abusive marriage before finding her way back to herself, and now supports women and children through that same fog of confusion, shame, and self-doubt. We talk about why abuse so often hides in plain sight, how it grows slowly until it feels normal, and why the advice to “just leave” can be dangerously out of touch with the realities of control, fear, and limited options. Amanda breaks down what a healthy relationship actually looks like: safety, respect, and the freedom to speak your truth. Respect isn’t negotiable, it’s the baseline, and when it’s missing your mind and body end up living in survival mode. We also explore the body’s role in healing. When emotions are suppressed, they don’t vanish, they show up as tension, exhaustion, and illness. Amanda explains how kinesiology and muscle testing can help identify the beliefs and patterns that keep survivors stuck, so they can rebuild self-worth, reconnect with their values, and take small steps that create real momentum. Sometimes healing looks as simple as going to the park, breathing, and proving to yourself, again and again, that you matter. If this touched something in you, share it with someone who needs a steady hand, and please subscribe, leave a review, and tell me what your next step toward yourself will be. Real Leadership Starts Long Before A Crisis Hits, with Jay Jacobson

Send us Fan Mail The leadership lessons that change you most rarely come from a boardroom. They come from rooms filled with grief, from high-pressure phone calls that rewrite the day, and from moments where the only real move is to show up with your whole self. That’s the lens we bring to this conversation on Healthy Mind, Healthy Life with Jay Jacobson, a funeral director turned disaster responder turned entrepreneur who was called to testify before the United States Senate on funeral ethics and who now teaches leadership from the inside out. We dig into what funeral service teaches about emotional intelligence, empathy, and nonverbal communication. Jay explains how learning to read tone, body language, and what’s left unsaid becomes a daily practice of presence and integrity, and why that’s the foundation of servant leadership. We also talk about his earliest “training” as a paper boy, where dependability and face-to-face connection built trust long before any leadership title existed. Then we zoom out to the future of work. With AI making knowledge instantly available, Jay argues the real advantage is the ability to connect with people, especially as phones and screens reshape how teens learn communication skills between ages 13 and 18. Finally, he shares what crisis leadership looks like on the ground, including his experience responding to United Flight 232 in Sioux City, and how personal tragedy later shaped his book, Lead by Legendary Example, built around pillars like mentorship, vision, adaptability, presence, and integrity. If you want leadership that holds up in real life, press play, then subscribe, share this with someone who leads people, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show. How Society Shapes Your Anxiety And Emptiness, with Greg Pai

Send us Fan Mail That quiet moment when you realise you’ve “made it” and still feel empty can be more frightening than failure. Greg Pai joins us to argue that the anxiety, numbness, and constant pressure so many people carry may not be a personal flaw at all, but a predictable outcome of living inside systems designed to shape what you value, what you chase, and even who you think you are. Greg is an entrepreneur, systems architect, and the author of *Voice of the Heart: The Battle for Your Purpose, Peace and Passion*. He shares the surprising catalyst behind his framework, including a turning-point experience in Kenya’s Maasai Mara that helped him see patterns he’d been unable to name for decades. From there, we dig into his core model: the “voice of the world” (parents, school, media, bosses, politics, social pressure) competing with the “voice of the heart” (intuition, conscience, inner clarity). If you’ve ever felt successful on paper but hollow inside, this conversation puts language to that experience and offers a way to map what’s happening. We also explore Greg’s tree-based map of 12 interlocking societal systems, from family dynamics and education to technology and data, finance and government, health and justice. Then we go straight at the modern mental health trigger few of us can see clearly: your digital footprint and the identity you don’t control. Greg explains why he’s less afraid of artificial intelligence than he is of data extraction, and what “owning your identity” could mean for privacy, wellbeing, and even economic dignity. If you want more than quick self-help fixes, you’ll hear two practical takeaways: “selfless help” (solve problems for yourself and others at the same time) and the victim-soldier-warrior progression (how to stop unknowingly serving broken systems). Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review with the biggest insight you’re taking away.
