Ask This Question to Understand What a Working Relationship Looks Like

If there's one thing I could shout from the rooftops about hiring an editor, it might be, "Don't hire just any old editor to get a seat filled. Make sure it's one you actually WANT to work with." In fact, that's what this whole show is about. What if there was one question you could ask that would give you confidence, help you understand whether they are a flake or a solid performer, and whether their style matches yours? Whether you even want to work with that editor. Listen to discover that question and how you can leverage it to make a great decision when looking for a professional podcast editor. 4 Places You Might Find a Great Podcast Editor

Find a great podcast editor (for you) doesn't start with where you're looking. It starts with knowing what you want and need. That's why we started with that. But where you look is INCREDIBLY important. If you've been following the process we've talked about in the previous episodes, you already know what you want and need, what you can pay and what you'd prefer your budget to be, and even whether you want to work with an individual, a team, or an agency. Knowing that puts you WAY ahead of the game when you start looking. But where should you look? Listen to discover 4 general places - or categories of places - you can look. What Should You Spend On Podcast Editing?

If you're thinking of hiring a podcast editor, there's a 50/50 chance the first question you had was, "How much is this going to cost me?" Of course, as with most things, the answer is, "It depends." But that doesn't mean anything goes. [ 🗨️ Join the Conversation ] Hiring a podcast editor can be a bit of a scary thing - not only because you're giving away a bit of the control of your show. Giving up a little of the creativity. Trusting someone else to make decisions that are at least as good as what you would do. But that trust factor is only one. Bringing on an editor is also a financial commitment. That is, unless you think you can find someone who will be willing to offer the level of service you need for some kind of barter agreement of the promise of experience and exposure. Not to fear, though. While there is a financial component it doesn't have to be scary. Like the other things we've talked about, it's possible to develop a plan. To have a framework for making the decision. All it takes is a bit of focus and planning. Your 1-2-3 Decision Process for Hiring a Podcast Editor

Deciding HOW you're going to make a decision on what might be the most important outsider you bring into your podcast production process. You've spent a good bit of time envisioning the future, planning your path, and identifying what you need and want. You've even spent time clarifying what's most important. What Will You Focus On Once You Have a Podcast Editor?

You're almost ready to start talking with editors. Over the past few episodes, you've gone through the process of clarifying the goal you're shooting for and any gaps that might exist. You've identified some things you'd like an editor to help you with and even started prioritizing things. But before you start looking for an editor, manager, or producer, there are three things I think you should consider. We're going to cover the first one this week. What will you focus on next? Or put another way, what will you do with all your free time? While this might seem like a "throwaway" question, it's incredibly important because it not only helps you identify the value of bringing a podcast editor, manager, or producer into your production, but it also helps you actually maintain your focus as you navigate the transition you're about to go through. Consider This Before Choosing What Kind of Podcast Editor You Want

We've talked a lot over the last few episodes about what you want and need, and that's important. But one thing I think many people miss when they are looking for an editor is that not every editor has the same kind of business model. Think it doesn't matter? Think again. Your editor's business model will significantly influence the kinds of services they are able to offer, the way you work with them, and so much more. Each different business model archetype has some pros and cons. After today, you'll have an understanding of each, and be able to pick the one that you think will work best for you. And it will absolutely influence where you look for the best editors and how you make your choice. Here are the 4 categories: FreelancerSmall TeamAgencyEmployee Listen now, and then take a minute to think through what will be best for you! Let's Define What You Really Want (or Need) In a Podcast Editor

What are you REALLY looking for in a podcast editor? It's time to get specific. If you want to take the work we've been doing and turn it into a list of what you want (and need), this is the episode for you. Over the past few episodes, we've laid the groundwork to help you understand and communicate what you're looking for. Gone through the process of imagining what the ideal future might look likeIdentified some things that are falling from your plateDefined what STYLE of editing you're looking forHiighlighted some roadblocks and constraints Now it's time to do two things: consider other (non-editing) services and trim down the list. You'll want to use the notes you've been taking over the past few episodes and listen for a few ideas, as well as some thoughts about how to trim the list down and prioritize it.
