Hiring Movers: Qualities and Skills to Look For The Moving Mastery Podcast with Louis Massaro

    • Management

In this episode of The Moving Mastery Podcast, Louis Massaro shares what qualities and skills to look for when hiring movers.
You’ll learn:
What qualities and skills to look for in your applicants Why you must have an exact criteria for deciding which mover applications to send through the hiring process How to avoid hiring the wrong person for your team When you are hiring movers, there should be some specific qualities and skills you’re looking for in the ideal candidate. Their individual qualities as a person, as an employee, and then you have their skills of moving furniture and things like that.
So, how do we determine exactly which qualities and the skills that we're looking for?
It's important as we go out and start to do our recruiting efforts that we establish a criteria for sorting through the applicants. This will allow you to basically run them through a filter to make it easier to find the best candidates.
Either they match the criteria or they don't match the criteria. If they match then they move on to the next step in the hiring process. Simple.
In this episode of The Moving Mastery Podcast, taken from one of Louis’s Moving CEO Business Program monthly livecasts, he shares his process for determining what qualities and skills to look for in your mover applicants. And, he also walks you through his Mover Applicant Quadrant to help you simplify the hiring process and quickly get the helpers you need to service jobs.
Movers don't need all the skills of lumping, packing, padding, crating, etc. to be a good candidate for your team, because you can always train them on what they don’t know how to do.
But, it is important that you identify the criteria you need at the time, because your criteria is different at different times.
You might be looking for just drivers right now. You might be looking for just helpers or even helpers that don't even have much experience, that can just lump furniture.
It depends on the time of year and what you're looking for at the moment, so before you ever go to place an ad to hire, you want to establish what your criteria is for hiring, what you're looking for now so that you could sift through every applicant quickly.
Then, once you have your criteria, the next step is to divide up the applicants into Louis’s Mover Applicant Quadrant.
There are four types of applicants that are going to be coming in, and in this podcast, Louis shows you how to use his Mover Applicant Quadrant to get the best applications running through the hiring process quickly by determining exactly what type of applicant they are:
Type 1: Experienced, Good Qualities
Type 2: Inexperienced, Good Qualities, Eager to Learn
Type 3: Experienced, Bad Qualities
Type 4: Inexperienced, Good Qualities, Not Eager to Learn
When it comes to hiring we tend to make things bigger and more complicated in our minds than they need to be. But if we're able to systematize and take things and just lay them out, and go step-by-step, one foot in front of the other... It becomes easy to make good decisions quickly.
Louis talks so much about process, process, process, but when you have those processes, it eliminates all the mental effort of trying to figure every little thing out, every single day.
You just, essentially, hit start on the process and run it step-by-step. Done.
