    #117 Empowering Leaders

    #117 Empowering Leaders

This week's guest, Kerry Resch will share with us how to develop leaders and come alongside people to empower them to become all that God designed them to be. Kerry has been a staff worker with Cru for many years, serving in several capacities of leadership, currently as a coaches' coach. She also is a mother of five children. I learned firsthand when she was my supervisor that she not only is a godly woman but also an inspiring and helpful coach who has guided many to have fruitful ministries.

Kerry shares some principles of how to empower leaders to lead:
    1. "People don't care what you know until they know that you care."
    2. Find out how they are doing personally.
    3. What do they need in order to reach their goals?
    4. Listen to them.
    5. Show them appreciation.
    6. Be a cheerleader for them.
    7. Align those you are leading to the vision and mission while giving them freedom in how to express this.
    8. Know your people and adapt your leadership to each person's personality and what environment in which they best thrive; such as, How much structure or freedom do they need?

What can you do to help yourself to grow as a leader?
    1. Take time to self-reflect.
    2. Enjoy deep community with the Lord.
    3. Have a coach or two in your life - one for your personal growth and one for your work growth.
    4. Lead in the context of a team.

    Helpful tips to avoid burnout:
    1. Become comfortable saying "NO."
    2. Live out of your values.
    3. Maintain your margins.
    4. Step out when it is time to move on or you cannot meet the expectations of the job.
    5. Deal with areas in your life that need healing.
    6. Be vulnerable and authentic with others. Don't fight to live up to others' expectations, but rather, follow God's will.
    7. Don't get into a cycle of the tyranny of the urgent. Plan ahead,
    8. Have a couple of people who know you well, cheer you on, and accept you even with your flaws and mistakes.
    9. Have a friendship or coach on the outside to give you perspective.
    10. Don't be afraid to fail - we learn and grow through it.

#116 Never Too Old or Too Young to Try New Things

#116 Never Too Old or Too Young to Try New Things

Dottie Small is a role model to all whom she knows. Her mindset is that you are never too old and it’s never too late to try new things and serve the Lord. In her 80’s, she looks 25 years younger and has the energy of a 50-year-old! At 82, she started a podcast, Thoughts to Ponder. She has been a blogger for years. The Lord spoke to her that there was more for her to do to reach people. Her heart is to advance the Kingdom and to encourage believers to understand what it means to be a new creation.
When Dottie began to walk in the power of the Spirit, she saw great change in her life. The Spirit opened her understanding of the Bible. The Holy Spirit leads her as she writes her blogs and teaches on her podcast. Dottie encourages us to “stay in our lane.” Don’t try to do it all! Do one social media platform or one ministry at a time. Once you feel confident in that, then you can add another as God leads.
We are never too young and never too old to serve God. Always have room in your life to help others in their faith and serve God no matter what your age. Run the race and throw off everything that hinders you so you can serve God and bring Him glory. Let our life align with the Word of God and hold on to Jesus. This will enable you to serve Him no matter if you are young or old. God enables us to do everything we are asked to do through His Spirit. God will bring people into your life to help you. Remind yourself that it is God who has a race for you, and He has plotted out the course. Thus, seek Him to see what path to take. And then depend on His wisdom and power to lead you. Dottie says, ‘We don’t retire, we just refire!”

#115 The Truth about Sex Trafficking

#115 The Truth about Sex Trafficking

We know that sex trafficking is a growing problem around the world, but there are so many facets that we don't understand about it. Emily Karc, founder of a non-profit, Learning to Live Beloved gives us deeper insights into the roots behind women who are sex trafficked. She is also the author of Dear Mama, a devotional for the weary mama's heart.

Emily struggled with several unhealthy relationships with men, but through this, she began to explore the root of why she kept choosing harmful relationships. God healed the shame in her heart and the feelings of being unloved, not good enough, and unworthy. Through a coach, she was helped to see where her shame began, and how to accept God's forgiveness. Through soul care, inner healing, and speaking the truth to dispel the lies brought her freedom. Bondage and soul ties were broken. She was drawn to reach out to other women who live in bondage to shame. A common thread of women who have been sex trafficked is shame, rejection, and heartbreak, thus, she felt a calling to reach out to these women.

Through her ministry, she helps the women see there is hope and forgiveness. She encourages them to let go of the shame and open their hearts to the depth of God's love. Most, if not all women who are sex trafficked did not choose this. Rather, the majority of the time, they have come from a childhood of being sexually abused. They then became very vulnerable and attract more abusive men. The traffickers often give them highly addictive drugs which puts them in a cycle of dependency to give sexual favors to pay for their drugs. Others are kidnapped at an early age and forced into the sex trade. It is hard for them to get free of their captors, and some feel so much shame that they don't feel they can return to their families. Some women get caught in the sex trade through social media.
Emily's nonprofit Provides housing and counseling for the women so they can get out of this lifestyle. Another way to help reduce sex trafficking is by raising awareness in our schools and churches.

    #114 Balanced Approach to Exercise

Our guest Cari Vann struggled with chronic pain for years. She gained degrees in physiology and was doing a lot of exercise. But after a serious car wreck, she was forced to slow down and learn ways to exercise that were more balanced. She stopped pushing through the pain and learned to listen to her body. After that, she developed the Complete Well Body Method for women forty-plus. She now empowers Christian women entrepreneurs to achieve balance and boost productivity in their lives.
Cari developed the 5 Pillars for Pain-Free Movement:
    1.       Mobility Stretching
    2.       Therapeutic Pilates
    3.       Fascia Release
    4.       Develop Whole Body Strength
    5.       Be Moving
Listen to this episode and learn more about each of these important pillars of movement. At the end of this episode, Cari gives us some helpful tips to make balanced exercise a habit.

    #113 Understanding Our Bodies

    #113 Understanding Our Bodies

Our guest, Carolina McFarland is a Health and Wellness Consultant and Coach. She has been in the field of functional medicine lifestyle for twenty years. She was in Corporate America before that. She has always been health conscious, but she used to have many health issues. The top health professionals could not help her gut disorders, brain fog, fatigue, and lethargy. But someone told her she should try getting a food sensitivity test and micronutrient testing. This revealed to her that she had a severe reaction to grain. She eliminated all the foods she was sensitive to and learned new foods to eat. Quickly, all her energy came back. She slept well. The GI symptoms and brain fog went away.  This set her on a journey to train in massage therapy, and specialized training in Cranial sacral working with the nervous system. She felt the Lord calling her to know Him in the deepest way by pursuing knowing more about the body. She became a consultant and coach.
All health begins in the gut. If you can’t break down your food properly, then it will lead to inflammation throughout your body. If we are eating foods that trigger our immune system, then this will even influence our brain and interfere with us making choices, and handling the circumstances in our lives. Microbiomes become imbalanced if we eat unhealthily and this affects our whole body. What we eat has a direct influence on our courage and how we make decisions.
Brain and gut are intrinsically linked. Long-term antibiotics create an overabundance of yeast (candida) in our digestion which relates to GI symptoms. We are all unique. So we should get individual help to see how we should eat to have a healthy body, rather than go on the recent most popular diet.
Our body is mostly water (80%), including the brain, so we need a lot of hydration so all the systems work properly. Sugar has many forms. We all metabolize sugar at different rates. Sugar alters our brain chemistry. If our glucose level spikes we can get brain fog.
Know your body type. For example, not everyone has a body that will do well as a vegan. Many bodies need red meat. Other people do well on a vegetarian diet. Digestion starts in the mind, then the mouth.
There are three primary things that help us to be healthy:
    1.      Self-awareness – Know our bodies
    2.      Self-regulation – What can we do to bring ourselves back into balance?
    3.      Self-agency – Decisions we make about our health that will put us in alignment with God’s Spirit.

    #112 Leaders and Losses

    #112 Leaders and Losses

Carrie Pierce is an author, ghostwriter, publisher, and has been in the Radio and Television industry for 20-plus years. She is co-director of Morgan-Pierce Media and Publishing Company. In her 60’s, she ventured to start this company. Hers is a story of thriving after a major life change.
She was controlled by childhood trauma throughout much of her adult life. She cared for her parents for twenty years. Her plan after her dad died was to move to a new city with her mom. She wanted to start a new life while starting a publishing company, but the Lord told her to put it on hold. Soon after her mom was diagnosed with cancer and died. It’s been a year and a half of grief but this has moved her to total dependence on God. The Lord has been showing up powerfully. She and her friend have begun her publishing company, despite several setbacks.
When we have any kind of exodus in our lives we have to die to our old self, our past, our past belief systems. In deep grief, you can lose perspective and just ruminate on your losses. In midlife and beyond, we are called to review our lives, our faith, choices we have made, and to be real. Get your ego out of the way. Be willing to look at our traumas and make peace with things. We need to work through our past traumas so we can let go of control and let God be in control. Choose to live out our faith passionately. Live out God’s dreams rather than our own dreams. Midlife is a tremendous time of power where we can be our true selves rather than what everyone else wants us to be.
God knows our future, so follow Him. God will bless us if we surrender to His love, His power, and His will. His way is the best way! God calls us to step into challenges no matter what our age.
