Why Are Some Watch Brands Underappreciated?

Why Are Some Watch Brands Underappreciated?

This week I'm joined by Ben Clymer and client advisor Rich Fordon. We cover a range of topics, but our main discussion is about underappreciated high-end watch brands. Using Laurent Ferrier as something of a case study, we discuss why an important watchmaker might not be recognized as such by the market, what went wrong, and what can be done to change a brand's perception.
Before that, we offer quick takes on some of the biggest news of the last week: We talk about Audemars Piguet's slate of releases, including John Mayer's limited edition QP; the Morgan Stanley Luxe Consult report on the Swiss watch industry in 2023, finally, we offer a few recommendations for Hollywood movies about watches, as Oscars season comes to a close.

What Watch Brands Get Right (And Wrong) About Proportions

What Watch Brands Get Right (And Wrong) About Proportions

This week, I'm joined by Danny Milton and Malaika Crawford, and we're talking proportions: What watch brands get right, what they get wrong, and what we want to see more of. We start with Malaika's recent article, "The Plea For Proportionality," but quickly jump into recent releases from Vacheron Constantin, Tudor, and a whole lot more. While some of these smaller and mid-sized releases have garnered headlines, at large, average watch sizes haven't gotten much smaller, though options have certainly increased.

Nowadays, tastes are broader than ever before, and that's creating a new demand on brands to recognize that goods things can come in small, medium, and large packages.

We finish with a wish list of well-proportioned watches we'd like to see from brands.

    Fantasy Watch Draft 2024

    Fantasy Watch Draft 2024

This week, I'm joined by Danny Milton, James Stacey, and Mark Kauzlarich. We're bringing back an old school format that's a lot of fun: The Fantasy Watch Draft. Like fantasy football, but for watch nerds. Each of us builds a five watch collection in each of the following categories: Sports, dress, complication, indie, and budget (under $1,000).

    Breitling CEO Georges Kern

    Breitling CEO Georges Kern

For the first time, the Breitling CEO discusses the Universal Genève Acquisition; then, we look back at his tenure at Breitling so far.

This week, Breitling CEO Georges Kern joins Ben and Tony for a chat. Kern has been in the watch industry for over 30 years and has led several large Swiss brands. He joined Richemont in 2000 and played a key role in integrating A. Lange & Söhne, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and IWC after the trio of brands was acquired. He became the conglomerate's youngest CEO in 2002 when he took the helm at IWC.

Our conversation starts with an in-depth discussion of Breitling's surprise acquisition of Universal Genève, including details on Kern's plans for the brand's relaunch. Then, we talk about his tenure at Breitling before zooming out on the changes he's seen over his more than 30 years in the watch industry.

    Hodinkee Radio – We're Back!

    Hodinkee Radio – We're Back!

In our pilot episode return, we have thoughts on Breitling's acquisition of Universal Geneve, Blancpain x Swatch, and more. Then, we give out some collecting advice.

Hodinkee Radio is back! After our 10-episode run of "Ben Clymer Presents," we're happy to be bringing Hodinkee Radio back to a weekly show. Plan to catch a new episode here or in your podcast player of choice every Wednesday. Hodinkee Radio will be hosted by me, Tony. Each week, I'll be joined by a couple of fellow editors to discuss a big topic. We'll also bring a guest to the show once a month, and we've already got a good one for next week – stay tuned.

This week, I'm joined by James and Danny to discuss some of the news and releases we've already seen in 2024: Blancpain x Swatch Scuba Fifty, Omega's newest Speedmaster, and what we want to see from Breitling's acquisition of Universal Geneve. After that, we introduce a new segment, "Collecting Advice," where a listener reaches out with a watch-related inquiry and we do our best (or worst) to offer some guidance.

We recorded this pilot episode a couple of weeks ago, so bear with us – the discussion will be fresher in future episodes.

New Format

I just got into watches about 6 months ago, and eventually found Hondinkee’s content. I didn’t listen to the “old” podcast format (so I can’t comment on that), but really dig the new format, and glad to see it’ll be a weekly podcast. The “what’s on your wrist” and “collecting advice” are good standard discussion points—looking forward to hearing those in future episodes.

Bring back SJP

Not fun and entertaining like back in the day. Too much glamour and glitz.

Disappointing

Lost its original touch and special voice. Now is just part of the hype train and have completely sold out. I hope they figure out how to engage again but keep losing good people and now have laid off many staff (again).
