So epigenetics is really the exciting new future of disease treatment, wellness treatment that's here now. But in cancer, it's really exciting because it means no longer is the DNA the genetic code fixed and closed to influence. (00:28): Welcome to 60 seconds with Dr. Thomas Lodi. (00:32): That's the thing with the ketogenic diet, so you have to find the recipes. If you're going to make your own recipe, there are apps. You can find the app, but if you're going to make it, just look it up on the nutrient content, make sure that, "Okay, [inaudible 00:00:42] I use a hundred grams of this." It's a complicated little thing, but once you've made that recipes that you like, it won't be, "Oh no, there's a huge [inaudible 00:00:51] six weeks ago." You're going to say, "Oh yeah, great." Because you like it. It can be delicious. You just have to find out what you like and then you'll find out how much time you should put the... You got to study yourself and you find out how much time you have to put between meals so that you can stay in ketosis. So you can do this. (01:07): What I want to do is give you back your power, your life. Your health is your birthright. It's your birthright. Not all of us have that blessing, but us here, we made it to these ages that we are. That was our birthright. Okay. So we've got to take it back and it was lost from ignorance. It was lost from being born in this society. (01:43): In these promoter regions, which are non-coding regions in the DNA, they are going to turn on or off genes that can impact cancer potential or cancer growth. And the environment interacts to change that genetic expression. The genes don't change, but what they express does. Just like the person that I am doesn't change, but my sleep affects my outlook for the next day. I get good eight to nine hours of sleep solid. I wake up. I'm energetic, ready, clear thinking, which fortunately, today that's the case, versus maybe I didn't sleep well and I wake up tired, lethargic. I can't think. My brain and my mouth are going two separate ways. That's a good example. (02:36): But then there's other regions what's called histones. These are proteins that the DNA will wrap around and you can actually turn genes off this way. And so this is where people talk about methylation that is a carbon and three hydrogens and methylation being a way to treat cancer. A lot of people talk about cancer as a hyper or hypomethylated state, and they speak in absolutes. But in actuality, the definition or the answer to that question, "Is cancer a hyper or hypomethylated state?" The answer is really, yes, it's both. You can hypermethylate and turn off a tumor suppressor gene. At the same time, you hypomethylating turn on an oncogene depending on where that process is happening. So epigenetics is really the exciting new future of disease treatment, wellness treatment that's here now.
