Honoring YOUR Timing for YOU Becoming a Mom The Honest Mom Podcast

    • Mental Health

I was 35 when I became pregnant and 36 when I gave birth to Brooklyn. In medical standards, I was an "old mom". Even in society's standards I was considered a "concern" as people asked me when my husband and I were going to have a baby. I wish I had Bethenny Frankel's "Get off my jock!" quote near to me during that time as a family member would ask why we were waiting or my OBGYN tried to instill feelings of urgency with my eggs getting older by the minute. Perhaps you have these same pressures around you and question your own timing with having a baby? Then this episode is for you.

What many didn't know (and some that did STILL would ask us when we were having a baby) is that my husband and I decided to wait so I could bond with his 2 children. We waited 5 years. An eternity for people around us. I wanted the chance to get to know his children, establish a connection, trust, and stability before introducing a screaming human into our home. Even with that time and prep, it was STILL hard for the kids to adjust to this baby that was taking over the house and our attention.

I also wanted some QT with my husband before having a baby. Time to travel, get a bite without a high chair, sleep in, and take walks with our Starbucks with no rush or childcare.

YOUR story is unique as well and it's OK to tell people to "get off your jock" and not share your "why". No one but you and your partner will be 100% responsible for this baby. They won't be there for the sleepless nights, the breastfeeding, the tantrums, the anxiety, worrying, frustrations, and giving more than you ever thought you would. They aren't raising this human.

The other side of this coin is you may have a baby right away and you'll STILL get smack for that. You're rushing things, you need to give time for your marriage, save money, enjoy your freedom. So either way you're screwed so you might as well just do it when you are ready.

I hope this episode makes you feel confident in your decision. ANY decision you make in your life. Thank you for listening, sharing and please connect with me off of the podcast so we can chat more about this. Know my Facebook Group is always there as well, The Honest Mom Project.
