What is hop·nólogy?

For the purposes of this podcast, it's James and Gregg tossing around their observations after 10+ years in the hops industry. Over that time we've developed some conclusions - and a whole lot of opinions - about what works and what doesn't in the beer community triangle of consumers, growers and brewers. Join us and our periodic guest contributors as we run the gamut of topics from "mom said I could plant a half acre out back" and "Mr. Brewer sir, what do you mean you won't buy this garbage bag of hops that I just picked from my backyard" to the guy who wanted to dry his hops in an old casket. Yep, that really happened.

    #65: Roots!

We hope you’re feeling like some hard-core horticulture today.  James digs into roots, we continue the campaign against bull shoots, and there might be a Ferris Bueller reference in there somewhere.

    #64: Mythbusters!

We thought about just doing a montage of James making faces at bad questions, meme-style, but instead we spent 45 minutes complaining about bull shoots, weekend warrior hop farming, a Toyota Camry Tractor and every other question that it feels like we’ve answered 1,000 times already.

#62: Hops Aromas and Brewery Re-openings

There is so much going on in this episode.  First we get into a long discussion of hop aroma sensory analysis, of course filtered through the Bionic Nose that we call James.  Then there’s the future of taprooms and what we can expect to see once restrictions are lifted.  Along the way we share Gregg’s Covid-19 beer rotation plan because, hey, refrigerator space is limited right now.

    #61: Fungicides!

We’re heavy on the science this week, focusing on mildew.  Protectants, curatives and Ridomil enemas, oh my!

#60: German Hops & Idling The Farm

When you think of German hops you likely think of Noble varieties and classic beer styles.  Yet over the years the demands of the market have forced German hop farmers to move with the times, and the more modern varieties coming out of the region have tended toward high alpha and dual purpose hops.  Speaking of dual purpose, on this episode we also dive into how to idle your farm when demand and available labor are not what you had expected them to be.  In case of unexpected events such as, I don’t know, maybe a global pandemic?

Victor from Lion Bines ,

Thorough, informative and entertaining

These guys dish out relevant knowledge weekly that is one of the only easily digestible avenues for hop farming and the business behind it. It is a wonderful resource to be able to draw on their extensive knowledge and experience well. We built our drying system solely based on what was discussed on the drying show. Thanks for all the work you guys do! Cheers.
