What is hop·nólogy?
For the purposes of this podcast, it's James and Gregg tossing around their observations after 10+ years in the hops industry. Over that time we've developed some conclusions - and a whole lot of opinions - about what works and what doesn't in the beer community triangle of consumers, growers and brewers. Join us and our periodic guest contributors as we run the gamut of topics from "mom said I could plant a half acre out back" and "Mr. Brewer sir, what do you mean you won't buy this garbage bag of hops that I just picked from my backyard" to the guy who wanted to dry his hops in an old casket. Yep, that really happened.
There’s a fine line between “that’s a creative way to save some time and/or money” and “uh oh, what did I just do?”. Sometimes those great ideas don’t work out too well, leading to the eternal battle between Current James and Future James.
The brewing industry is currently contending with a wave of accusations of inappropriate behavior, following on the heels of #MeToo in many other industries. What do two old white men have to say about it? How about this: Be Better.
#118: State of the Beer Market & Future Farming
This week we discuss some of the beer trends of 2020 and then get into where farming could be in the next 20 years. It’s full of odd concepts like “share of throat”, “hippie vinegar tea” and “decorating the cow with data”. Also, see what happens when Gregg tries a really unpleasant beer.
BYBF: Spruce Tips
It’s time for some more Backyard Brewfarm, and in this episode we’re talkin’ Spruce Tips. How to use them, why they’re different than pine and why you should get ’em while they’re young.
#117: Copper & How NOT To Be A Brewery
A bit of a mixed bag this week. We start talking about copper and then vent a bit about the basic blocking and tackling involved in running a brewery during the digital age.
#116: Customer Service Pt. 2
As we discussed in Part 1, Customer Service is a mindset spanning all aspects of the customer lifecycle. When things go sideways you get into the Customer Support part of the equation. This week is about how – and how not – to react in those situations.

Good information, insufferable to listen to
If you’re looking into growing hops and want some useful information, you can find it here, but you need to tolerate the insufferable complaining about every single thing the beer community has to offer from 2 pompous curmudgeons to be able to find that useful information.
