The Flagship: Why the Big 12 could control College Football fate

The Flagship: Why the Big 12 could control College Football fate

In what seems reminiscent of 2010 conference realignment, the Big 12 conference could in fact hold the key to whether or not college football is played this fall.
In this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes discuss the latest news that came down early this week as the Big Ten and Pac 12 Conferences decided to cancel fall sports in 2020. This decision, which should be viewed as suspect after the Big Ten unveiled its new 2020 schedule six days ago, but dominos fell over the last weekend which led to this scenario taking form this week.
But just because the two Power Five conferences chose to make a rash decision for the upcoming season does not necessarily mean the Big 12, SEC or ACC will follow suit.
Chip and Taylor discuss why the Big 12 Conference may in fact be the swing vote in if college football is played this fall as the SEC and ACC conference officials have made public statements about being willing to move forward with the season based off expert medical professionals advice.
The Flagship Podcast discusses all the variables that come into this situation, including how Big Ten schools may have the opportunity to bounce and play against the conference's wishes if they choose to do so.
Chip and Taylor then jump into the weekly Love it or Leave it segment with this week's topics focused on Texas football's return for fall camp, including if Tom Herman's stated biggest concerns are the most relevant concerns for Texas this season, the position battles to watch in fall camp and how the COVID-19 face shields could be a disaster in the south this season.
Catch all of that and more in this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast.

The Flagship: Why Texas QB Casey Thompson's dad, Charles Thompson, is comfortable with his son playing this season

The Flagship: Why Texas QB Casey Thompson's dad, Charles Thompson, is comfortable with his son playing this season

The fate of the 2020 College Football season remains in limbo after reports circulated over the weekend that the Big Ten and Pac 12 conferences were contemplating canceling the upcoming football season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
After a day of misleading reports, the Big Ten has apparently not voted to officially cancel the upcoming football season while the Big 12, SEC and ACC have yet to openly address the current state of the conference's conversations.
But without football season, what would that mean for student-athletes who already have frequent access to testing and COVID-19 test screening since arriving on campus?
On this week's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast, former Oklahoma QB and father of Texas backup QB Casey Thompson, Charles Thompson, joins the show and gives the parent perspective of the ongoing situation surrounding COVID-19 and why he believes his son is safer being in a controlled environment on campus at the University of Texas. Charles Thompson also weighs on the progression of his son and how he could be poised to take over for Sam Ehlinger upon Ehlinger's departure from Texas, what Casey Thompson offers as a backup QB and much more.
Catch all of that and more on Monday's interview episode of The Flagship Podcast.

Longhorn Blitz: Talent won't hold Texas back in 2020

Longhorn Blitz: Talent won't hold Texas back in 2020

Rod Babers, Matt Butler and Jeff Howe wind up at one conclusion on this week's episode of Longhorn Blitz: If Texas doesn't win in 2020, it won't be because Tom Herman and Co. lack talent. Whether it's offense, defense or special teams, the Longhorns have the pieces to win the Big 12. As this week's show gets into, however, it's up to Herman and an overhauled coaching staff to make it all come together.

The Flagship: How Big 12's 9+1 schedule model will alter the course of the Texas football season

The Flagship: How Big 12's 9+1 schedule model will alter the course of the Texas football season

The Big 12 Conference officially announced its plans to move forward with a 10 game schedule for the 2020 season — nine conference games and one non-conference opponent. The announcement came down earlier this week after the Big 12 board of directors voted on the 2020 scheduling model, which now removes two of the more difficult non-conference opponents from the Longhorns' schedule this season in LSU and South Florida.
On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes dive in to the Big 12's scheduling decision and how the move will impact Texas in 2020. One major change the decision will cause is the Longhorns' non-conference opponent, which according to Chip's reporting, will be UTEP rather than South Florida as an effort to keep the away team travel money in the UT System of schools.
The hosts also discuss the Longhorns' most recent safety measures for home football games as University of Texas officials continue to finalize plans for the upcoming season, including taking a hard look at a 25 percent fan capacity inside Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium, and when to expect an announcement on the start of fall camp for Big 12 teams.
The Flagship then shifts its focus to our weekly 'Love it or Leave it' segment, with this week's topics including the toughest game on the Longhorns' schedule, how the injury to Oklahoma middle linebacker Caleb Kelly could impact the Sooners' Big 12 title chances, if the Power Five conference schedule changes actually benefits the Big 12 since it already plays a round-robin, nine conference game schedule each season and more.
Catch all of that and much more on this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast.

The State of Recruiting

I have been listening to the podcast for quite some time, and I am always impressed and informed.
My question is do you think present verbal commitments Billy Bowman, Juan Davis, Jonathon Brooks, and Casey Cain will ultimately get an increase in their ranking? Further, do you think targets like L. Johnson, Terrence Cooks, and Jaden Alexis will get an increase in their ranking?
