We recorded this show on April 4th, 2020 China time, which was the start of the Ching Ming Festival, aka Tomb Sweeping Day. This date is also now the national memorial day for victims of the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Yingying, sporadic burnings of “hell money” are the only visible sign of the old normal. Brendan shares LA updates, and together they discuss challenges of the present, hopes for the near-term future, and some of the bigger broader potentials for the post-pandemic world.

Amazing program

As a Chinese person living in the Bay Area, I feel these topics are the most important ones to everyone. Many times governments lack cultural knowledge about other countries. Sometimes they make bad decisions without understanding people and their culture, and whether they are really facing friends or enemies.I really like Ying Ying, she is smart and wise, also super kind.

HOW CHINA WORKS is essential listening

HOW CHINA WORKS is essential listening for the China-bound or the China-curious, covering a comprehensive range of personal and professional topics with good humor and good advice. Ying Ying and Brendan are an engaging info-comic podcast duo, representing the Western-savvy Chinese insider and the China-initiated foreign outsider with wit and wisdom. As someone who has been living & working in China for ten years, I’m not only enjoying HOW CHINA WORKS, but am still learning from it. - Kevin Geiger

Compact, efficient lessons on cross cultural understanding

I’ve spent the last three years working between the US and China and was still able to find helpful lessons from this podcast.

The hosts break down important social concepts (like jokes, dating, etc.) and give clear examples on how to best navigate them as a visitor to China.

I would recommend listening to this podcast if you want to make a good impression on your next business trip to China
