HNTKYP The Intoxicated Patient
In this "intoxicating" episode of HNTKYP, Kevin McFarlane and Dr. Lisa Wolf explore the challenges of triaging intoxicated patients in the emergency department. They emphasize that managing intoxicated patients is far more complex than often perceived. The discussion includes intoxication as either a primary issue or a secondary complication, the pitfalls of anchoring bias, and the poor correlation between blood alcohol level (BAL) and the behaviors exhibited by the patient. Grab a beer, sit back, and enjoy this episode—unless you're driving, of course.

HNTKYP Documentation
Good documentation allows for a retrospective understanding of a patient's condition when they arrived and how it has progressed. Vital signs are particularly critical as they reveal trends and can help detect potential issues. But here's the real challenge, finding that sweet spot between meeting the demands of documentation and actually delivering hands-on care. We'll break down the struggle and explore how emergency nurses can balance both worlds.
Join Kevin and Dr. Wolf as they dig deep into the importance of accurate documentation in capturing a patient's journey and keeping the entire healthcare team in the loop. Plus, we'll touch on the legal side of things and how thorough charting can save your bacon if any legal issues arise. -

Long time ER nurse who found both Art of Emergency Nursing and HNTKYP Podcasts over the past year. These have given me so much encouragement in being in the specialty of emergency nursing. I have been passing on these ER nursing specific podcasts to all our new ER staff (nurses as well as our techs that are in nursing school.). I hung up the names of these resources in our break room and keep encouraging my colleagues to take a listen. Thanks for all you do to encourage, equip and advocate for this specialty!
Love this Podcast!!!!
I’m a new nurse in the ER and I have shared this podcast with my coworkers and they love it. These episodes have been sent to my nurse manager and shared in my UBC mtgs. Thank you for sharing your experiences and the importance of what people should be doing to keep pts safe!! Dr. Wolf is so real and has helped me so much in my own practice. Thank you thank you!! I look forward to the new episodes. I would love to hear about the covid burn out nurse crisis and how the new nurse coming in can resuscitate the crumbled culture of jaded nursing and lack of care because they just don’t have it in them anymore. I encounter negativity and bullies daily in my ER and providers that scold nurses like children. How does the new nurse get through without bursting into tears in front of everyone? I would love to hear an episode on specifically dialysis pts and their high blood pressure and the nurse upstairs freaking out about the pt coming up with high blood pressure, even though the pt needs to have dialysis yesterday!?? I love you guys and hope you see my message.
Great stuff!
New ED nurse here! I appreciate the experiential expertise shared in this podcast. This is the nitty gritty that they don’t teach you in nursing school.
