The Radiohead of Metal: Deftone's Around The Fur

The Radiohead of Metal: Deftone's Around The Fur

Eager to ditch the nu-metal label, Deftones headed into the studio with a goal to separate themselves from the pack on their second album Around the Fur. This ambition saw the group embrace their non-metal influences, leaning on the cerebral and ethereal qualities of bands like Depeche Mode. This combined with Chino Moreno's unusual vocals gave Around the Fur it's signature loud-soft dynamic, perhaps earning the band it's reputation as "the metal band it's okay for non-metal fans to like."

Whatcha Heard: The Heaven and Hell Edition

Whatcha Heard: The Heaven and Hell Edition

Look, we'll be the first ones to admit it: we listen to a lot of shoegaze and dream pop on this podcast. And you'll get plenty of that on this episode. But you'll also get children's songs written by a beloved 90s alt-rocker, an aggressive blues-harmonica, and some epic 70s jazz-fusion from a group of musicians that used to pal around with Miles Davis. Only on No Filler will you experience that level of musical whiplash! Tune in for our monthly mixtape episode for January.

The Trailblazing, Ear-Bleeding Fuzz of Dinosaur Jr.

The Trailblazing, Ear-Bleeding Fuzz of Dinosaur Jr.

To kick off the year, we return to our deep-dive episode format with a look at Dinosaur Jr.'s second record, the massively influential fuzz of You're Living All Over Me. The signature ear-bleeding guitar sound and slacker vocal delivery J Mascis perfected on this record went on to influential countless grunge acts and indie bands in the 90s and 2000s. This record was way ahead of its time and a truly seminal record that hinted at was right around the corner just years before grunge would take the underground mainstream.

Bromance

Love hearing the brothers talk about music that means something to them. Entertaining banter that only a true familial bond could produce. These bros are the real deal

IForgotToPutInTheCrystals ,

Unimpressive

I'm sorry to say these guys aren't very impressive. They seem to spend the whole podcast trying to apply genre labels to music that doesn't need such labels. And the band is called Coc-TOE Twins (not Coc-TAW).

Natenate101 ,

Great album selections

What other podcast is gonna cover The Mercury Program's 'A Data Learn Language'? Not to mention the Radiohead coverage. Good stuff fellas, keep it up.
