10 episodes

If you waited by the TV for new episodes of “Are You Afraid of the Dark” each weekend or wasted study hall reading the weird parts of the encyclopedia, this one’s for you SPECIFICALLY. “Human F*ckery” pits a doctor of psychology and an investigative journalist against one another in a battle of wits, research, and creative storytelling. Each episode the curious pair get assigned a topic. Then, they go spelunking through history’s colon in an effort to find the most jaw-dropping, unbelievable, and utterly bonkers examples of that topic buried in the dark history deposited by our collective ancestors. What’s the point? To captivate, occasionally horrify, and accidentally educate a rotating panel of judges—including you, the listener—into crowning one of our hosts the winner. This irreverent showcase for darker narratives buried in the historic trash heap was the winner of 2021’s Best of the Beat Award here in New Orleans, which means it’s enjoyed by people besides the hosts’ parents.

SEASON 2 PREMIERE! Doctor of clinical psychology, Edward Simon and recovering journalist Kimberly Kaye are finally back to spelunking in human history’s colon for their friendly competition to see who can enthrall listeners most. This month, Team Edward dredges up the true story of the Château de Montsegur, site of a massive religious martyr killing, infamous religious relics, and apparently even some UFOs. Team Kimberly counterpunches with a trip to St. Petersburg, that city built by a sociopathic torturer and home of a waterway which allegedly lures onlookers to their death via hypnosis. Whose piece of true dark history will win? Paranormal Investigator Amanda Paulson (@prettyfnspooky) and Religious Ritual Researcher/Tarot Reader Celeste Mott (@celestemott) slide into the guest judge seat to weigh in.

Secret Story Time Bonus Episode: "Skeletons in the Diva’s Drag Closet"

Secret Story Time Bonus Episode: "Skeletons in the Diva’s Drag Closet"

Happy Pride month fellow LGBTQ+ nerds! Who wants to hear about queer people rioting against police brutality, runway walk-offs, and dead bodies?! Human F*ckery celebrates queer history 12 months a year, but we do love a month where re-sharing the shadiest stories from under the rainbow is extra appropriate. This “Secret Story Time” episode debuted in January via our Patreon and featured Mother Dorian Corey, one of the great queens of the ballroom scene. The shocking secret she had stashed in her New York City closet made headlines for months, but there’s a lot about Corey—and the world she lived in—that never made it into the salacious newspaper reports.

Secret Story Time Bonus Episode: "All Mine:" How Joel Guy Jr. Ruined Thanksgiving

Secret Story Time Bonus Episode: "All Mine:" How Joel Guy Jr. Ruined Thanksgiving

Another banter-free installment from our subscribers only Secret Story Time series!

So, the holidays have been a bit strange this year. A global pandemic, money problems, crushing existential dread. Some folks can’t get close enough to their families, others can’t escape them. It’s easy in times like these to romanticize; to look back through a rosy portal at the past, time filtering out the imperfections, and long for the way Thanksgiving “used to be.”
During such delicate, emotionally triggering times, it’s our professional duty to remind you all: Thanksgiving is a shit show. Seriously. Always has been. The “first Thanksgiving” was, at best, an anxious and unsatisfying day. (At worst it was an utter fabrication used to manipulate people into making hand turkeys every November). The pressure of the holidays has been making people crazy for generations, and there’s a legacy of police reports to prove it.
This Secret Story Time is for anyone feeling a little low or isolated during the holidays. It may make you thankful for a little extra time alone. And if you like what you hear, there's a whole backlog of episodes you can stream at: https://www.patreon.com/humanfuckery

Episode #7 - "Really Haunted Houses, Part 2"

Episode #7 - "Really Haunted Houses, Part 2"

A direct hit from a Category 3 hurricane (thanks, Zeta!) has been survived, the power is back on, and we are finally back with Part II of REALLY HAUNTED HOUSES! In Part I, listeners were introduced to New York’s “House of Death” and Japan’s “Takahata House,” two pieces of terrifying real estate with paranormal activity as their main amenities. This week special Hollywood actor/director Justin Welbourn (Final Destination, The Signal, Justified), join co-hosts Kimberly and Edward to declare one of the stories the “winner.” The gang also discusses how Americans feel about haunted houses, which ghost presidents should win the election, and the shocking murder which is the epilogue to The House of Death’s history.

Episode #7 - "Really Haunted Houses, Part 1"

Episode #7 - "Really Haunted Houses, Part 1"

Few things light up a spooky nerd’s Halloween like a great haunted house. Since there are fewer physical haunted houses to visit in 2020, cohosts Edward and Kimberly dive into the chaos, anxiety, and paranoia of reeeally haunted houses in this competitive Two Part holiday special. Team Edward walks listeners into “The House of Death,” a little-remembered (and also chilling) piece of retro New York real estate. Team Kimberly goes to the far East for the tale of Takahata House, an entire haunted apartment building hiding in rural Japan. Who should win? Drop by Instagram @humanfuckerypodcast or Twitter @humanfuckerypod and tell us.

    Episode #6 - "Louisiana Cults"

    Episode #6 - "Louisiana Cults"

Cults—they’re not just for aspiring Hollywood celebrities anymore! With their inviting exterior and savvy intimidation tactics, cults like Scientology, Jonestown, and the Branch Davidians have captivated curious onlookers for centuries. But as the internet continues to isolate Americans and spread misinformation faster than COVID-19 at a pool party, they’ve also become a chilling part of the mainstream political landscape. Hosts Kimberly and Edward report on The Church of Sacrifice and Hosanna Church, two very real cults in Louisiana’s semi-recent history. Special guest judges Meghann McCracken (screenwriter and essayist) and Jared Loper (Sucker Free Jiu-Jitsu), both former members of extreme religious sects, join Human Fuckery in the studio for a wild chat covering QAnon, HBO’s “The Vow” and NXIVM, and a whole lot more that will leave you going “Uh...W.T.F.” If you like this episode, support our team and get exclusive access to bonus stories, interviews, and content at http://www.patreon.com/humanfuckery
