313: Inside the Mind of Jay Shetty

Jay Shetty's viral wisdom videos have garnered over 4 BILLION views and he has gained over 25 MILLION followers globally. His health & wellness podcast, On Purpose with Jay Shetty, offers insights to purposeful living and debuted at #1 on iTunes.

Jay was named in the Forbes 30 Under 30 Class of 2017 for being a game-changer and influencer in the world of Media. Jay aims to deliver educational and insightful content in an entertaining, uplifting format - with the mission of making wisdom go viral. His inspirational video reach is known to skyrocket upwards of 100 million views within days of launch. He has created content for and partnered with the likes of Snapchat & Facebook and serves on the National Geographic Chasing Genius Council.

After meeting a monk at the age of 18, Jay sought to redefine personal success. He was inspired by a life of service, impact, and passion as opposed to money, fame and power. After graduating with a first-class BSc (Hons) Degree in Behavioral Science from Cass Business School, he turned down lucrative job offers from prestigious companies, moved to India and lived as a monk. He traded his suits for robes, shaved his head, slept on the floor and lived out of a gym locker. Jay meditated for 4-8 hours a day and studied ancient philosophy. Half the day was spent on personal growth and the other on help others. This included everything from personal and collective meditation, study and reflection to teaching and philanthropy. For three years, Jay helped build sustainable villages, food programs distributing over one million meals per day and coached Millennials throughout India and Europe.

Jay received a proposal from his guru who believed he could share what he had learned if he left the path. Jay moved back to London with his parents, in massive debt with no recognizable skills on his resume. Fortunately, his friends, now working for the largest organizations in the world yet experiencing tremendous stress and pressure, invited Jay to coach them on wellbeing, purpose, and mindfulness. Jay began sharing his experiences as a monk in the world's largest corporations including EY and Nasdaq.

Driven by a desire to share his learnings with as many people as possible, he re-engaged with the world and dove head first into learning about the tools and techniques that might allow knowledge to spread as fast as entertainment. He joined Accenture, helping them build their digital division while learning about the forces shaping the new digital landscape. He quickly became their #1 social media influencer, having advised over 150 executives on their personal brands, which provided a very broad base with which to test theories. He leveraged his findings to launch his own Facebook page in 2016.

Jay's videos were spotted by Arianna Huffington, who asked him to create a series for HuffPost. His first four videos hit over 50 million views - the highest HuffPost had ever received. Arianna invited Jay to New York to be a Senior Host & Producer for HuffPost Live where he created #FollowTheReader. The Facebook Live Daily Talk Show, featuring authors and life-changing ideas, became #1 for audience engagement - with themes that include passion, purpose, mindfulness, resilience, failure, and communication.

311: Joe De Sena | Go Through Hell Like a Spartan

311: Joe De Sena | Go Through Hell Like a Spartan

Joseph De Sena, 44, has been an entrepreneur since his pre-teens. From selling fireworks at age eight, to starting a t-shirt business in high school, to building a multimillion-dollar pool business in college, to creating a Wall Street trading firm, De Sena is a living definition of the word "entrepreneur." Currently he is a managing director for ICAP, a brokerage agency.

De Sena knows what it feels like to succeed outside the office, too - and that's the feeling he seeks to bring to the world's athletes with the Spartan Race series. Throughout his lifetime, he's competed in any extreme sports adventure he could find, testing his mental and physical endurance against nature.

Growing up in Queens, Joe's mother valued healthy eating and living and passed along that value system. It's been well-documented that he worked hard growing up and ultimately got to Wall Street, where he made his mark and made himself a small fortune. He moved his family to Pittsfield, Vermont, and quickly entrenched himself and his family in the local landscape. Joe moved to Vermont in an attempt to get back to the way things used to be.

It's also well documented that Joe turned an interest in endurance racing into a passion. His racing resume is the stuff of legends - over 50 ultra-events overall and 14 Ironman events in one year alone. Most of his races are 100 miles or more with a few traditional marathons in the mix. (He once said that running a 26.2 marathon distance was "adorable.")

To put it in perspective, he did the Vermont 100, the Lake Placid Ironman and the Badwater Ultra... in one week. The elevation climb for the 135-mile Badwater race, which starts hundreds of feet below sea level in Death Valley, is over 8,500 feet up to Mt. Whitney and temperatures soar into the 120's. Joe also biked cross-country in the Furnace Creek 508 which has been coined "The Toughest 48 Hours in Sport." It's no wonder his favorite quote is, "Death is the price we pay for life, so make it worth it."

    Joe's other athletic achievements:

    - Raid International Ukatak: Canada, January 2001
    - IditaSport: Alaska February, 2001 (1st place)
    - Odyssey Adventure Race: Big Island, Va., March 2001
    - OAR Beast of the East: Clayton Lakes, Va., April 2001 (1st place)
    - Raid The North Extreme: Newfoundland, June 2001 (13th place out of 42)
    - Adrenaline Rush: Dublin, Ireland, July 2001
    - Discovery World Championships: St. Moritz, Switzerland August, 2001

In 2005, Joe decided that the world needed a new race, something that had never been done. And so, together with Peak Races, he created The Death Race, a 24-hour mental and physical test filled with unknown obstacles (www.youmaydie.com). Racers couldn't and wouldn't know what to expect. The fear of the unknown would either break or motivate, and all they could do was try to survive. The race waiver includes three words: "I may die." It doesn't get any more real than that. No way to train, no way to prepare, just show up and make it to the end. And don't expect any love from Joe or the volunteers. They want to break these people, make them quit. Joe's been quoted as saying, "There's no light at the end of the tunnel. We're basically holding your hand to help you quit. The same way life does, right?"

Joe, and other racers who came to be called the "Founding Few" wanted to create another event, something that captured the extreme spirit of the legendary Death Race, but was modified and accessible to a much wider racing audience. And so the Spartan Race (www.spartanrace.com) was born in 2010.

Spartan Race has grown dramatically in 2013 over just the year before. The number of competitors now stands at approximately 350,000 racers in 60 races in 2013 in the U.S., Canada and the UK. Over 3 million...

310: Heather Monahan | Truth Behind Being Confident 24/7

310: Heather Monahan | Truth Behind Being Confident 24/7

Heather Monahan started from very humble beginnings growing up in Worcester, Massachusetts. After graduating from Clark University, she began her career in sales and quickly advanced to top salesperson and Brand Manager within her first year in corporate America. After being harassed in her position, she left the wine business and started working for Wilks Broadcasting as a salesperson in radio. A year later she was offered an equity partnership which required her to move to Saginaw, Michigan.

Heather made the difficult decision to leave her family and friends behind and move alone to the Midwest for the chance to create value and potentially sell the Saginaw properties for a gain. Within three years in Saginaw, she significantly increased the group's value resulting in a successful sale of the properties more than doubling the purchase price from 27M to a final sale of 55M. Heather then moved to Naples, Florida to begin working for Beasley Broadcasting where she started as a Director of Sales.

After one year of substantial revenue results, she pitched herself for a position that didn't previously exist and was awarded the VP of Sales title for the company. Over the next few years she pitched herself for and was awarded the newly created EVP Sales position and ultimately the Chief Revenue Officer title.

During this time Heather launched her personal brand to empower women and give them the insight and tips she had longed for as a young professional. She was the Keynote speaker at the Corinium CRO conference and held the main stage at the LOAC in NYC. Heather was recognized as a Glass Ceiling Award winner and as one of the Most Influential Women in radio in 2017. After being terminated by another woman in July 2017, Heather became a full time entrepreneur.

In 2018 Heather was named the Brand Ambassador for Perry Ellis International's female brand Rafaella and Thrive Global named her a limit breaking female founder. Heather and her son Dylan reside in Miami, Florida.

The key to reaching your personal and professional goals and living the life of your dreams lies in the power of confidence. If you don't have it, don't worry. Heather Monahan will show you how anyone can master the essential techniques to building confidence and becoming your best self.

In Confidence Creator, Heather offers a resource she wishes she had when she was younger. Using personal stories from her life and career, Heather illustrates the tough lessons she learned along the way that helped her develop the self-assurance necessary for getting what she wanted in life. You'll discover how to determine your number-one enemy, attract the right people, find your voice, and more.

Whether you've never had the confidence or have lost it due to a breakup, divorce, unemployment, or another one of life's challenges, this book gives you the tools to take charge of your life and create your own confidence.
