The Golden Mic Podcast w/ Marc Cordon

Ep. 048 I AM. w/ Eileen Hernandez

https://play.goldenmicpodcast.com/0048_hernandez

As Eileen Hernandez took the stage to address her high school class, each step echoed as a call out to the many roles Eileen had switched between to become the school's valedictorian.

Step. Born into a proud Mexican Family who ate carne asada on the weekends with her extended family.

Step. The oldest child that would take care of her siblings.

Step. A student, feeling the isolation of being the only Latinx in her grade.

Step. A valedictorian who had just one more STEP to go.

Step. A brilliant all-American student and family member who could no longer keep the secret she had kept to herself for so long.

...Eileen is an undocumented person living in the land of the free and the home of the brave. STEP!

As a valedictorian, she was in the pole position to receive scholarship money, that we're allocated only for “the documented.” This didn’t prevent her from going to college, as she now is a student who will proudly walk across the stage of the College in which she attends, stop on the red dot, and proudly declare her voice.

I'm most proud that the Golden Mic Podcast w/TEDxOcala 2020 ends with Eileen’s interview.

See Eileen in a limited live audience or live-stream on Saturday, November 7, 2020, from 10am - 4pm EST at the College of Central Florida.
