'Frogman,' 'Monkey Man,' 'Late Night with the Devil,' and 'The Night of the Hunter' + Hollywood Remakes Discussion

'Frogman,' 'Monkey Man,' 'Late Night with the Devil,' and 'The Night of the Hunter' + Hollywood Remakes Discussion

Frogman (2023), Monkey Man (2024), Late Night with the Devil (2023), and the haunting The Night of the Hunter (1955) all get covered on this episode of I Watch More Movies Than You! We have four movie reviews this week, all spoiler free except for the deep dive into what is regarded as the greatest American film of all time, The Night of the Hunter.

Frogman is the latest found footage cryptic film to be circulating the interwebs, and we couldn't be more stoked to have watched this flick and now get to share our thoughts on it, the found footage genre, and cryptids- FUN!

Monkey Man was saved by the great Jordan Peele from Netflix obscurity and now graces our silver screens! Dev Patel's directorial debut is one you do NOT want to miss, so go ahead and hit play and let Bobby walk you through a spoiler free review of the latest stylized revenge action picture that will leave you HYPED!

Late Night with the Devil is up next, directed by Cameron and Colin Cairnes and starring the lovable Mr. David Dastmalchian as a younger Johnny Carson on a Halloween night in 1977. This movie is is entirely a late night show from the 70s and we are dropped in on a host who's past is dripped in tragedy, his ratings are falling, and he needs one gigantic, unforgettable night to launch him back to stardom. The question is, would you trade your soul!?  Seriously, give our review a listen and then go watch this film ASAP- you have never seen anything like it. HORROR IS THRIVING!

Last but CERTAINLY not least, Charles Laughton's only directorial attempt ever, The Night of the Hunter. Starring robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters, and the silent-film star Lillian Gish, you are dropped in on an incredibly charismatic self-proclaimed preacher and one of the most haunting stories you shall ever encounter. Unforgettable photography, too dark of a story for the era it released, and a heavily German Expressionism styled film that all are woven together to create a child's nightmare, but a cinematic masterpiece.  Come with us as we journey through it and decide whether or not we believe this film to be worthy of the title of the greatest American movie of all time, and the tragedy that was the director never got his flowers this side of the grave.

We also briefly discuss Hollywood remakes, in light of Scott Derrickson and writing partner Robert Cargill taking on the gargantuan task of remaking The Night of the Hunter. I BELIEVE IN THEM! Comment with a 5-star review the best remake that you believe has ever been made!

And if you enjoyed spending time with us and watching movies, would you care to leave us a SMASHING 5-star REVIEW?! We'd greatly appreciate it, and we greatly appreciate YOU, film lovers!

The Holdovers, Saltburn, May December, Godzilla Minus One - Movie Reviews and 2024 Oscars Preview

The Holdovers, Saltburn, May December, Godzilla Minus One - Movie Reviews and 2024 Oscars Preview

We provide spoiler free movie reviews of some of 2023's greatest films, 'The Holdovers,' 'Saltburn,' May December,' and 'Godzilla Minus One!'  Do not miss your one stop shop for the Academy Award's 2024 Oscars preview, because these movies will absolutely be topics for discussion this award season!

A warm hug on a winter night, The Holdovers. We start this episode off with The Holdovers, an incredibly human story that we rarely get in the theaters nowadays. Directed by Alaxander Payne and starring Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and introduces us to Dominic Sessa, The Holdovers is the PERFECT Christmas and winter watch that will etch its way into so many Christmas film rotations. But this movie is so much more than that, it is a heartfelt coming together of such a loveable cast of characters, from the grumpy old school teacher that has reached a stasis in life, to the heartbroken cafeteria lady that is struggling to move on, all the way to the foolhardly high school kid that is the absolute antithesis to the professor. This movie has it all, from unforgettable performances to a beautiful soundtrack, and Christmas card cinematography that transports you to New England underneath a blanket of snow and intrigue. Do not miss The Holdovers, and follow us as we journey through it in a spoiler free review!

The talk of cinema town, Saltburn! We have two very different opinions and battle them out in our spoiler free review of Barry Keoghan and Jacob Elordi's latest film! Emerald Fennell is talented behind the camera, and Rosamund Pike is spellbounding, but where do we finally land on the IT movie of the moment!? Listen and find out!

An absolute gem was released at the end of the year on Netflix, but not enough people are discussing it- don't let this film pass you by! May December! Todd Haynes is back with another polarizing melodrama, this time s tarring Natalie Portman, Charles Melton, and the always incredible Julianna Moore who gives potentially the performance of the year. This is a complicated story based on an actual tragedy, but leave our assumptions at the door because May December and it's incredible score and beautiful Tybee Island backdrop paint a picture for you that will leave you mesmerized, exasperated, and in dark contemplation. This movie is a summer dream, but given to us in December- do not miss it!

Last but CERTAINLY not least- GODZILLA MINUS ONE! Directed by Takashi Yamazaki, starring Minami Hamabe, Ryunosuke Kamiki, and Sakura Ando, Godzilla Minus One is a force to be reckoned with. Crowds are calling this the movie of the year, maybe one of the best in the last decade, but the crazy part?! Even the Kaijus passionate are raving that Godzilla Minus One may be the best Godzilla and monster movie OF ALL TIME! Can it possibly live up to that!? Explore post war Japan with us in our spoiler free review of Godzilla Minus One and find out if it lives up to the immense hype!

Each of these movies will be in the Oscars conversations in various categories, so please use this episode to go through all of them and arm yourself with movie knowledge to traverse this Oscars season as we give  you a preview of a lot of the heavy hitters and some that are understated! This is just the first episode of our Oscars previews, so please drop that 5-star review and subscribe and come with us again next week!

Love to hear it

This guy used to be my manager at AMC theaters roughly 5 years ago now and I missed talking with him and hearing his opinions on my favorite films and shows we enjoyed, Ken really knows his stuff and is passionate about it. Now I can relieve those days even after I moved hours away in the comfort of my home and office. Thanks for entertainment, boss.

Solid Theories, Entertaining Hosts

While there are a lot of podcasts out there, what I really enjoy about this one is that each of the cohosts acknowledge their own preferences while also breaking down what works and doesn’t work for each movie. Their theories are interesting to listen to, and in particular, Rob’s way of recommending movies based on when to watch it, how to watch it, and who should watch each film is super relevant. Overall, a fun listen that makes you think as well as want to watch a good movie!
