Trail Blazers come up short vs. Wolves + Norman Powell returns + Cody Zeller has surgery

Trail Blazers come up short vs. Wolves + Norman Powell returns + Cody Zeller has surgery

The Portland Trail Blazers came up just short against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Tuesday night, losing 109-107 in a game that came down to the final shot. It was too much Anthony Edwards (40 points) and not enough Anfernee Simons and CJ McCollum (32 points combined), and yet the Blazers still had a chance at the buzzer to win the game. This one demands a closer look at what happened in crunch time.
Plus Norman Powell returned to action after missing eight games. He came off the bench for the first time in his Blazers career and he looked like someone who hadn't played basketball in three weeks. But his returns means Chauncey Billups has to make a choice about starting Nassir Little at small forward or returning to a three-guard look that includes Powell.
Finally, Cody Zeller is headed for knee surgery that will keep him out for two months and almost certainly end his Blazers career as he heads into free agency. His absence for the remainder of the season underscores Portland's lack of depth along the frontline. A problem that showed up Tuesday against Minnesota and will stick around for as long as this version of the roster exists.

Trail Blazers keep it rolling on the road + Damian Lillard is 'in no rush' to return after surgery (w/ Lamar Hurd)

The Portland Trail Blazers wrapped up a six-game road trip at 4-2 with an impressive win over the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. The Blazers built a huge first half lead and then held on in the final three minutes to close out a road 12-day road trip, playing their best basketball of the season. Go figure.
Plus, Damian Lillard spoke to local media on Saturday for the first time since he had surgery on his abdomen to discuss his health post-surgery, how long the injury has been an issue and how the play of his teammates will inform his decision to come back this season.
Finally, Trail Blazers broadcaster Lamar Hurd joins the show to discuss the growth of Trendon Watford and CJ Elleby this season. This is Part 1 of my conversation with Lamar so listen and then come back for tomorrow's show for the rest of our discussion.

Blazers lose in Miami + Latest Trade Rumors + Western Conference Tiers

The Trail Blazers lost in Miami on Wednesday night, 104-92. CJ McCollum and Anfernee Simons each had monster firsts halves but the Heat defense locked up the Blazers down the stretch as Bam Adebayo put Portland away in final seven minutes.
Today's episode also breaks down the Western Conference Tiers, ranking each of the 15 teams in the West by group. It's a fun exercise to see where the Blazers stack up and how the playoff picture is taking shape. It's a monthly check in with what the rest of the West is doing and what part of the middle of the pack the Blazers belong in.
Finally, the show closes with the latest trade rumors. The Blazers are reportedly still in the market for Ben Simmons. Portland is also eyeing Jerami Grant and Jaylen Brown. Plus, an injury to Myles Turner in Indiana complicates the trade market for Portland and the rest of the NBA.

Trail Blazers at midseason: What have we learned and what's next (with My Friend Chuck)

Trail Blazers at midseason: What have we learned and what's next (with My Friend Chuck)

My Friend Chuck (Charles Tuggle) joins the show to revisit our over/under predictions from the before the season started to see how right, and mostly how wrong, we were about the Trail Blazers now that the team has hit the halfway point. Here's a hint we were mostly wrong about Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum and underestimated the roles and impacts of Anfernee Simons and Nassir Little. Plus, is Jusuf Nurkic the Blazers' most dependable player these days? Can that be true? It's worth exploring.
Finally Charles talks about what it means to be a fan of a scuffling team and we discuss the various paths forward for the Blazers from full tear down to running it back to all the paths in the middle.
