Needs way more research

I have several issues with this podcast.

It doesn’t seem like the hosts do much in the way of research besides reading online articles. They spend most of the time speculating in a way that I find to be very reductive: this person did x, which therefore means y. Human behavior is unpredictable; therefore, just because they did one thing, does not necessarily lead to one conclusion. A lot of their speculation also seems to be based on hindsight; they know how the story ends (or at least that the person is missing), so they view what could be innocuous events as sinister.

In the same vein, they exhibit something that is all too common in podcasts and internet posts in general: they’ve deemed themselves to be experts on just about every subject again because of articles they’ve read online or things that they’ve seen on TV or in the movies. The worst episode for this was one in which they were speculating wildly about a man who disappeared after being discharged from rehab (I couldn’t pinpoint which episode this was looking back through their catalog because their episode descriptions can be pretty vague and because they feature so many cases an episode in the old episodes) in which they clearly displayed that all that they know about drugs and drug addiction they learned from TV or the movies. Drug dealers absolutely do call their clients to offer them drugs, especially when they haven’t heard from them in a while, and both cocaine and prescription pills can be injected. I don’t expect everyone to be an expert on this topic or any topics, but please don’t act like you are one when you clearly have no idea what you’re talking about. It’s embarrassing.

I also think the show would be much better if it was just Rebecca offering the facts of the cases, rather than discussing the cases with Mike, who rarely has any insight to offer that again isn’t just pure speculation.

Finally, and this is more of a personal preference, I like the old format of covering multiple cases from one state per episode better than the new long-form discussion of one case over multiple episodes. Most cases can be summed up in 45 minutes (if you really want to be detailed) or less; many of them are not interesting enough to span multiple episodes and employing that format results in having to use filler to make it that lengthy, like interviews with family members that go over information that has already been covered.

Great concept/poorly executed

This could be a good podcast if they would step off soapbox (minus one star) and deliver a fact based well researched product (minus one star).
Tin can mic and odd music (minus another star).
