Disco demolition night

Wow! A brilliant bit of revelation--not just of our national history, but of my own. I'll bet many baby boom listeners will feel similarly. But I immediately sent the link to my 23 year old --I'd been trying just recently to articulate for her what disco WAS. I couldn't --so this was great. Also taught me a whole new vobulary/understanding of music.
I came of age musically in the 60s/70s: desperate puppy love for the Beatles; grooving to the Dead and Band at Watkins Glen; camping at folky/bluegrass festivals; "discovering" Miles Davis. As a straight white girl just beginning to have gay and black friends, I have to admit I was oblivious to disco's African-American roots and gay embrace (let alone its etymology--thank you for great details!)
As you reported, I was annoyed and even alarmed that "my" stations, like WNEW in NYC, were being crowded out, and bummed by the commercial, overproduced feel and look of disco. So the fact that I also loooved it-- was like a dirty little secret -- how long had I been waiting for SOME kind of music to move my hips and heat my blood? I couldn't play just my Motown tunes forEVER.
Your production brings this Night vividly alive , and starts a great conversation about all those streams of history. I can imagine hearing about it (beforehand) with some glee -- we liked to bust things up a playful way in those days --and I believe that the DJ /host didn't anticipate events. But his cluelessness (I was much younger!) can't be totally excused by the time frame, and any burning of art or media has GOT to evoke the wrong images. Burning bras or draft cards : different.

Thanks for this smart, funny, poignant piece that accomplishes so much in such a short space! (Unlike this review!) I'm a new and increasingly rabid fan of gimlet.
