Wonderful insight, Bitesized pieces

I have listened to the first season and I will say that the insights and story from this adventure are so useful. The way the curtain is pulled back to allow me to see what an experienced DM is thinking is so valuable. You get to experience the story evolve and see how a DM and group of players collaborate to create a story.

Each episode is short enough that you can keep track of what is going on, and you feel like you are part of the campaign. The tips that are offered are shared with humility and room for you to have your own way of doing things.

This is worth listening to! Please give it a try!

Fantastic peak behind the screen of a veteran DM

I’ve been binging this for a while now and I think it’s about time I give Phil the review he deserves.

This podcast has put into perspective how the preparation of a session and note taking after a session can look when you know how to go about it, at least, this is one way. For me personally I’ve managed to steal lots of methodologies that are making my life easier as a DM.

After the conclusion of the first season, the format changes to topic-based installments that touch on the ways he’s prepared, but not in the same chronological detail. This change was jarring and perhaps disappointing at first but I think it serves to take the training wheels off a bit and allow a macroscopic view of the thought process he uses when designing any aspect of the world or session.

It’s been invaluable to me and if I had any complaint at all it’d be that there’s not hours more to digest.

Oddly Compelling

This wasn’t exactly what I was expecting when I first listened. However, the recaps of the actual sessions coupled with anecdotes on how the DM made these encounters turned out to be really good listening. It’s also given a lot of good insight that has helped me craft campaigns for my own personal DMing!
