“Raise The Wage” – The Case for Equitable Pay for Social Workers

“Raise The Wage” – The Case for Equitable Pay for Social Workers

Problem Statement: Social Worker salaries need to be increased so that they are commensurate with their skill, education and credentials. Above anything else Social Work salaries need to be commensurate with the impact that Social Workers have on the lives of others? We also need to get society to move past the fact that Social Work is a “female-dominated” profession. In addition to that the vulnerable populations served are looked down upon and seen as morally flawed and therefore not deserving of the best of services. Those two facts alone negatively impact salary considerations for Social Workers.

Motivation:  My motivation to pursue this policy is embedded in my deep and profound passion for the profession. It is vitally important that policy-makers recognize and acknowledge the profound impact Social Workers make in every aspect of society. Having experienced first-hand the powerful impact Social Workers can have on a person‘s life is why I need to make sure that Social Work salaries are raised to an equitable level. l desire for others to experience that same “Power of the Profession” and be inspired to “pay it forward”. Therefore, we need to attract, recruit, train and retain highly talented and passionate individuals to become social workers.

Motivation: One of the first areas I believe should be addressed is to make sure that there is universal nation-wide “Title Protection” in the public sector. What this will do is prevent government-funded human service organizations from hiring non-educated and non-credentialed employees and identifying them as “Social Workers”. This allows agencies to pay them less and brings down the value of professional Social Workers. I believe that there should be "Social Work Student Loan Forgiveness". Research shows that high student debt and less than equitable salaries discourage many from pursuing a Social Work career. Lastly, it is vitally important for all Social Workers, regardless of what their job is, to always identify themselves as Social Workers. This is especially true of the many CEO’s and ED’s who have Social Work Degrees and are earning 6-figure salaries. This will go a long way of dispelling the myth that “you can’t earn high salaries” with a Social Work degree.

A Conversation With Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Political Social Worker

A Conversation With Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Political Social Worker

The Honorable Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Representing the 5th Legislative District of Suffolk County, NY.

Legislator Hahn is the National Association of Social Workers(NASW) NYS Chapter 2020 “Public Elected Official of the Year”

Kara Hahn(https://www.karahahn.com/)is the Suffolk County Legislature’s Deputy Presiding Officer. First elected in 2011 to represent the very same community in which she was raised and is now raising her family, Kara has worked to make government more open and responsive while strengthening the County’s central mission of protecting public health and safety. Legislator Hahn’s initiatives to better our environment and open spaces has earned her the role of chairwoman of the Legislature’s Environment, Parks & Agriculture Committee, while her leadership on issues ranging from domestic violence to drug overdoses has earned her key roles on the Legislature’s Health; Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services & Preparedness and Public Safety Committees. During her time in public office, Legislator Hahn has championed forward thinking public policies that have saved hundreds of lives by putting opioid antidotes in the hands of first responders and training lay persons to use the antidote in cases of suspected overdose; allowed County health professionals to follow-up with overdose victims who were saved in order to get them into treatment; enabled victims of abuse to better gauge their risk of being re-assaulted or killed by an abuser, and kept guns out of the hands of individuals deemed to be a threat to themselves or others.

Because of her thoughtful leadership, Kara was elected to serve as the Legislature’s Majority Leader from 2016 through 2019 and chosen as the body’s Deputy Presiding Officer earlier this year.

Prior to her election, Kara held roles as a Public Policy Coordinator for a child care advocacy organization, a Senior Public Relations Specialist for a multinational high technology corporation and the Director of Communications for the Suffolk County Legislature. Kara holds a Master’s degree in Social Work Policy from the University of Pennsylvania. She is resides in Setauket with her husband Christopher and two daughters. Legislator Hahn is presently running for Congress.
