The Sunshine Prevention Center W/Dr. Carter & Friends -- Trailer

The thought that our children were being faced with so many more challenges (Violence, Substance Abuse, Peer Pressures, Divorce, Bullying & Teasing….) was the motivation behind the founding of Sunshine in 1992.

Today Sunshine is a respected leader in the field of prevention (substance abuse and violence prevention) and is concerned about the social/emotional needs of all children and families.

Sunshine provides a Family-centered approach to prevention. All programs are designed to build on healthy social skills each with the focus on specific needs.

Support Groups normalize our struggles, helping us see that we are NOT alone, that others have gone through the same or similar things and that others DO understand.

A Conversation With Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Political Social Worker

A Conversation With Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Political Social Worker

The Honorable Legislator Kara Hahn, MSW - Representing the 5th Legislative District of Suffolk County, NY.

Legislator Hahn is the National Association of Social Workers(NASW) NYS Chapter 2020 “Public Elected Official of the Year”

Kara Hahn(https://www.karahahn.com/)is the Suffolk County Legislature’s Deputy Presiding Officer. First elected in 2011 to represent the very same community in which she was raised and is now raising her family, Kara has worked to make government more open and responsive while strengthening the County’s central mission of protecting public health and safety. Legislator Hahn’s initiatives to better our environment and open spaces has earned her the role of chairwoman of the Legislature’s Environment, Parks & Agriculture Committee, while her leadership on issues ranging from domestic violence to drug overdoses has earned her key roles on the Legislature’s Health; Fire Rescue and Emergency Medical Services & Preparedness and Public Safety Committees. During her time in public office, Legislator Hahn has championed forward thinking public policies that have saved hundreds of lives by putting opioid antidotes in the hands of first responders and training lay persons to use the antidote in cases of suspected overdose; allowed County health professionals to follow-up with overdose victims who were saved in order to get them into treatment; enabled victims of abuse to better gauge their risk of being re-assaulted or killed by an abuser, and kept guns out of the hands of individuals deemed to be a threat to themselves or others.

Because of her thoughtful leadership, Kara was elected to serve as the Legislature’s Majority Leader from 2016 through 2019 and chosen as the body’s Deputy Presiding Officer earlier this year.

Prior to her election, Kara held roles as a Public Policy Coordinator for a child care advocacy organization, a Senior Public Relations Specialist for a multinational high technology corporation and the Director of Communications for the Suffolk County Legislature. Kara holds a Master’s degree in Social Work Policy from the University of Pennsylvania. She is resides in Setauket with her husband Christopher and two daughters. Legislator Hahn is presently running for Congress.

The "Kelsunn-on-the-Air" Social Work Podcast, Award-Winning Flagship offering of “Kelsunn Communications” (www.kelsunn.org) went on location to record a podcast live on Saturday, June 19, 2021. This marked the commemoration of the first-ever "Federally Designated & Recognized" Juneteenth Holiday. This took place at the 3D's Aftercare, Inc. Community Center in Baldwin. This community celebration was the culmination of many months of planning . It was collaboratively sponsored by The Nassau/Suffolk Association of Black Social Workers (https://m.facebook.com/nassausuffolkabsw/) and the 3D's Aftercare, Inc. (https://www.3dsaftercareinc.org/) Community Center in Baldwin. Throughout the course of the day there were a myriad of cultural activities and workshops. We asked organizers and participants to stop in and share their thoughts and reflections on the historic occasion. We were delighted to hear and record some of the comments attendees and members shared. A couple of youth also stopped by to give their opinions on the historic day. This is a collection of the comments and contributions set to an African-themed, originally created music bed. Tune in to listen wherever you get your podcasts.
