112: The Wear-Ins and Outs of New Engines
Oil samples from engines that are fresh out of the factory, or from recently rebuilt engines, often contain a lot of wear metal and silicon. But why is that? And why do certain parts seem to produce more metal during the wear-in process than others? These were the questions a customer asked us, and in this episode, Blackstone Joe seeks to provide some answers.

Educational and Entertaining
I’ve been using Blackstone for oil analyses for over 10 years, but only started listening to the podcast last year. I learn something new every episode! Often times, questions I didn’t even know I had are answered in the various discussions. Good stuff!
Great for nerds and newbs alike
I’m an automotive nerd who always likes learning about new aspects of the hobby. Joe explains things in an easy to understand way and somehow, things don’t really become repetitive episode after episode. If you’re curious about used oil analysis or just looking to explore a new alley of the automotive hobby, it’s worth checking out.
Blackstone Joe makes learning awesome!
I’ve binged through the first 50 episodes while driving 125-350 miles a day for work and I am hooked. I actually had known about Blackstone Labs for years thanks to forums and YouTube but I had never really thought about sending my own oil to be analyzed. I always thought “ah, that’s for souped up stuff that gets ran hard and I don’t need that for my daily driver” until I bought my own 263,xxx mile diesel truck a few months back, and it had the oil I bought the truck with. I was wondering how this truck was wearing so I requested a sample bottle and it came with this nice little sticker about Slick Talk. So I looked up the podcast and started listening to it and was hooked from the get-go! I’ve learned a lot about oil, good music to check out, and have gotten to know a great group of people at Blackstone thanks to this amazing podcast. Keep on keeping on Blackstone Joe! I’ll close out with a quote from one of my favorite musicians that proved to be correct after listening to Slick Talk: “Motor oil is motor oil, just keep the engine clean!” ~ Sturgill Simpson - “Keep it Between the Lines”
