Helpful, Motivating Ideas in Small Bites

I decided recently to mount a new initiative to conquer my clutter — something that is a family trait but has been much worse for the past 15 years when I moved from a house to an apartment. I struggled for years there, and while I was able to move from that location with the help of a professional organizer, I fell back into the problems of struggling to get organized in my new apartment on the opposite end of the country.

In that second move, I extended an old back injury, and in my new location, I struggle with pollen and mold allergies which are active all year long in my new locale in Florida. I did much PTSD recovery work from childhood trauma including two years of extended EMDR sessions, but I think that I didn’t allow that healing to manifest in every area of my life.

So much more than a checklist!

Clutter is like a weed - it starts small, then becomes invasive until it has taken over everything. Most people try to eradicate the problem by mowing it down which helps it look nice, at least for a while. But eventually, what wasn’t treated below the surface comes back, along with the original, unsightly problem. Valerie and J.M use a whole different approach. They don’t just send you out with a checklist and a timeline to call a charity or a dump truck. They also don’t lure you with dramatic before and after pictures of smiling, former customers. They recognize that often the problem goes much deeper than just learning to throw things out. These podcasts are a wonderful introduction to their much more holistic approach - one that recognizes the deep mental roots of what causes physical clutter, the part that isn’t easily hauled off in a trash bag. Highly recommended!
