Ggggggizzelleee ,

This is so important, thank you for creating this podcast!!!

I’m Garifuna-American with roots in Honduras, my mom is Garifuna-Honduran and my dad is Salvadoran Indigenous, but I connect much more with my mother’s culture because I grew up with those of those traditions. I love my heritage and culture and I really want to go to Honduras to learn more and visit family in Tegucigalpa and see the areas my family originates from, Trujillo and La Ceiba. I’ve always been afraid that I’m not Garifuna or Honduran enough for being light skinned and being born in the US, despite my mom telling me to take advantage of my light because it’s better and easier than living life as an Afro-Latina even amongst other Latinos and being mistreated. (I want to clarify that I know my light skin grants me privilege, I’m not denying that. I’m just saying that I was afraid that my skin tone was enough to deny me my heritage and roots even if the rest of me like my eyes and stuff connects me to people in my family). This podcast has made me less afraid, made me feel less like an outsider. Nobody can take my culture and ancestors from me.
