#22 Level Up in Life with Curiosity

#22 Level Up in Life with Curiosity

"Curiosity is like building a muscle." Daring to Dabble shares the same concept.  Using Dabbling (or making small incremental changes to your life) is the easy entry point to learning, growth, engagement, creativity, brain health and life satisfaction. The book, Cracking the Curiosity Code by Dr. Diane Hamilton talks about this concept and its application in the work place.  Dr. Hamilton is an expert in emotional intelligence and behavioral science and works with companies to "unleash human potential."

The beauty of curiosity is that it allows you to being wrong and fail so that you don't give up and instead become interested about how to make changes to improve.  If you don’t take the time to look at what factors are stopping you, then you won’t know how to move forward.

She believes that there are four inhibitors to curiosity – Fear, Assumptions, Technology and Environment.  Curiosity Index is located in the back of the book.
Fear of what you may find out, hesitating to learn more because you don't want to look foolish. Assumptions, we assume that we know already and once we believe that we need to be seen as an expert we stop investigating new and different information in a particular topic.Technology provides us with limitless access to information and yet it can cause us to rely too heavily on it, stifling our creativity and possibly our personal experiences and interactions. Environment: how did upbringing and societal beliefs restrict us from wanting to be curious and on top of that we are so overwhelmed by life that we don't believe we have the headspace to keep learning.Elise also shares the value about being curious about the process of learning or changing as well. The process of creating something new or learning something new holds valuable information and learning components. So by being patient in the learning and doing we are truly gaining the most from what we do.
    About Dr. Diane Hamilton

#21 Hans Florine & Liesbet Bickett- Do Hard Things Challenge

We were incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to chat with Hans Florine and Liesbet Brickett. Two amazing individuals who are passionate about trying new things and Doing Hard Things, which is the name of the  challenge program they created, to develop community, accountability, inspiration and so much more. The Do Hard Things Challenge encourages people do and try new things via a list given out at the start of they year, participants share their progress, pictures and stories as the year progresses.

Here are Hans' and Liesbet's thoughts about life, growth and why they started DHT:
We believe happiness lies in finding joy and satisfaction in whatever you do, no matter how easy or hard.  It's not what you are doing but how you do it that matters.   We are creating a community dedicated to living powerfully and joyfully by embracing, welcoming and even inviting in life's challenges and turning them into opportunities for growth. We are here to support you by connecting you to others pursuing excellence through daily, yearly and lifelong challenges, by traveling at your side as your DHT Coach and by inspiring your local community with DHT events and talks.

In this episode we discuss some of the examples from the DHT list and how challenges are a very personal matter. What may be hard for one person is not necessarily going to be a challenge for someone else. That is the beauty of having lists and participating in communities such as this one. We have so much to gain and grow from in these experiences which range from writing nice letters to friends to lifting pounds and pounds of weights.

Growth is the name of the game in life. And Liesbet and Hans talk about the necessity for living in that somewhat uncomfortable space to achieve that growth through out life. And yes it does get a little uncomfortable on the podcast for a minute here and there.

#20 We all need Community. Here's Why...

#20 We all need Community. Here's Why...

In this episode Elise and Nicole share their personal stories about how the recognized the value of community in their lives.

Elise speaks about mostly wanting to be independent in her earlier years and somewhat participating in community elements until she realized that a major piece of what she was missing in her life was that community connection.

Nicole talks about wanting to connect with community once she felt the isolation of being a stay at home mom and really struggling to find other moms that shared a common interest.

Common interests or shared beliefs or goals are really the underlying features of a community. You don't have to be best friends with these people but through shared interests you do get to share a common language and align efforts and/or support each other.

Here is a quick list of the benefits of community
    (list from https://www.wellbeingpeople.com/2020/07/23/the-importance-of-an-engaging-community/ )
SUPPORT INFLUENCE SHARING REINFORCEMENT CONNECTION LEARNING/RESOURCESPASSION Nicole also refers to one of her favorite books Together- by Vivek Murthy where he talks about community being one of three essential relationships that people need to feel fulfilled.

We also encourage out listeners to join the Daring to Dabble Facebook Community to be inspired, support each other and be part of something bigger. In the group we will offer monthly challenges to help members start gain momentum in living life to it's fullest. We will have weekly lives so we can interact with members and talk about current podcast episodes or trending topics. We encourage members to share their experiences and gain motivation from each other.

#19 Interview with Richard Bothwell owner of Outdoor Adventure Club

#19 Interview with Richard Bothwell owner of Outdoor Adventure Club

In this episode we had the pleasure of sitting down with co-founder and owner of the Outdoor Adventure Club, Richard Bothwell.
The Outdoor Adventure Club  (OAC website link) is the premier choice for Bay Area residents looking to participate in outdoor adventures. Founded in 1996 by professional guides with a passion for getting people outside, the OAC leads adventures in California and across the globe to create memories that last a lifetime for their participants. With the OAC, participants experience amazing terrain, go places they might not go on solo, learn new skills from professional guides— all in a fun, welcoming community environment. If you are looking for awesome, guided experiences in the great outdoors, join the other Bay Area adventurers and make your weekend count!

The OAC takes all of the guesswork out of planning your next activity or weekend. From Rock Climbing, to snowshoeing, gorgeous hikes to Avalanche AIRE training, the OAC has a little something for everyone. The beauty of it is that you know you are safe hands the whole time with well trained, friendly and supportive guides so you can just focus on the fun of the experience.

The OAC also provides the amazing opportunity to meet new people is an relaxed, shared experience based situation. In this Episode Richard talks about how although the OAC is not intended to serve as a singles meet up situation, the community of participants are so welcoming and thoughtful that many couples over the years have met and married through joining in on the outdoor fun.

Elise and I are huge believers in the value of community and what better place to meet and befriend new people than out learning new skills! Shared experience is one of the greatest factors contributing to strong, lasting friendships.

In this Episode the  three of us also discuss the value of doing things that you love, even if you aren't good at it.  Activities that bring you high levels of joy are essential to living a full life. We discuss how frequently people don't do things when they are not good at it. Under the same thought processes often people don't try new things because of fear of failure.  The whole concept of Daring to Dabble is to try new things all of the time and let go of the need to be good at everything. Sucking at stuff is cool, as long as you are enjoying yourself of course.

We also discuss having the curiosity to start tuning into our bodies and listening for signals that guide us to try new things, take chances and make shifts in life. Richard shares about how the OAC was originally created. He speaks about the intuitive feeling we get, a quiet knock, a gentle tug, sometimes it's a bullhorn, that guides us to make shifts in our lives or to take a chance on something new.  These moments occur for us all, but so much of the time we are too distracted to listen. Both Daring to Dabble and OAC advocate for finding the quiet moments or new experiences that allow you to enhance and develop that listening.  Choose to start making changes and starting something new, we all have the capacity to get so much more out of our one extraordinary life!

There are so many more juicy tidbits of discussion that exist in this episode. Challenge, change, community, courage, curiosity... the list goes on and one.

Listen to this podcast. Don't miss out on life, it's happening right now.
