S2E6 BTK Part 6 - #8 Marine Hedge and #9 Vickie Wegerle - The Nude Church Photoshoot

S2E6 BTK Part 6 - #8 Marine Hedge and #9 Vickie Wegerle - The Nude Church Photoshoot

Season 2 Episode 6 - BTK Strangles Marine Hedge Then Drives Her Nude Body to His Church for a Photoshoot - Murders Vickie Wegerle Then Passes Her Husband in Her Car a Block Away.

Dennis Rader lived in a modest home at 6220 Independence Street in a quiet neighborhood in Park City, Kansas. It’s a neighborhood like any other, with the exception that a serial killer lived there, raising a family and enjoying what many would consider an everyday life. Rader was a friendly, outgoing person who sometimes took walks and would wave and say hello to his neighbors as he passed by, and it was on one of these evening strolls that he spotted Marine Hedge, who lived only six doors down from where he and his family called home.

Over the years, Rader would enjoy his evening strolls, and he often saw 53-year-old Marine Wallace Hedge working in her yard, but she was never too busy to throw him a friendly “Hello” as he and his daughter walked by. Although Dennis Rader and Marine Hedge lived on the same block, he never knew her name until seeing it on the news after he killed her. He often referred to her as “Marie” anytime his wife mentioned her working in her yard. Marine worked as the second-shift supervisor at a coffee shop at Wesley Medical Center, where Rader had seen her a few times, so he dubbed her “Project Cookie.”

On the afternoon of April 26th, 1985, Dennis Rader took his son and Cub Scout pack on an overnight camping trip. It was on this trip that Rader slipped away, drove into town, and took the life of his neighbor of over 30 years. After her death, it took almost a year and a half before BTK would strike again.

At the time, Dennis Rader worked for the security company ADT, and when he wasn’t on a job site, he liked to use his time and company vehicle to cruise the neighborhoods in what he called his “trolling phase,” looking for potential victims. It was one of these afternoon excursions on a warm day in June of 1986 when Rader spotted Vickie Wegerle exiting her gold 1978 Monte Carlo and walking into her house. He took to her instantly and decided to pay her another visit many weeks later.

On a hot evening near the middle of July, Rader parked a few blocks away and took a summer stroll past her house, but as he passed by, he could hear music coming from the open windows. Once he came even to the house, he saw her through the front window sitting at her piano, playing what he considered some of the most beautiful music he had ever heard. At this moment, all other potential projects were put on hold, and BTK made “Project Piano,” as he referred to Vickie Wegerle, his main priority.

Two months later, on September 16th, 1986, around 11 am, Rader, dressed as a telephone repairman, visited Vickie Wegerle’s neighbors, telling them he would be working on the phone lines in the area. He then went to Vickie’s house, where she played piano while her 2-year-old son played in the playpen.

Rader knocked, and after checking on her son, she walked up to the open screen door. He told her he was working on phone lines in the neighborhood, and thinking him legitimate, she let him in. After showing him to the phone near the dining room, Rader pretended to test the line before pulling out his .357 Magnum. Vickie told Rader her husband was on his way home for lunch, so he quickly strangled her before escaping in her car.

Only one block away, while driving home for lunch with his wife and son, Vickie Wegerle’s husband, Bill, noticed an unknown man pass him in his wife’s car.

S2E5 BTK Part 5 – The One Who Barely Got Away –

The Ghostbusters Task Force is Formed

On an unseasonably cool Saturday evening in April of 1979,
death stalked 63-year-old Anna Williams and her 24-year-old granddaughter, Rebecca, in a small house next to a gulley at 615 South Pinecrest St. in Wichita, Kansas. Dennis Rader, also known as BTK, was excitedly hiding in her closet, waiting for Mrs. Williams to come home so that he could finally complete Project Pinecone, his codename for their brutal murders he had been anxiously planning for months. Unfortunately for Rader, fate would step in for both women in unbelievable ways, sparing their lives.

By July 1984, with no breaks in the case, investigators
developed the BTK task force nicknamed the “Ghostbusters.” With seven years’ worth of DNA evidence, lists of males who lived within 1 ¼ mile of the victims, a list of white males attending Wichita State University between 1974 and 1979, the names of everyone who checked out the engineering book where the Otero letter was found and the addition of a computer consultant to the team, investigators were able to generate 225 possible suspects.

Was Dennis Rader on any of these lists or named as a
potential suspect? Stay tuned as we find out just how close Anna Williams came to becoming BTK’s 8th victim and how close investigators really were to taking Dennis Rader off the streets.

In the 70s and 80s, women would check to see if their phone
lines were cut to know if they were safe. Now that cell phones are the norm, how will you know if the boogieman is in your closet, waiting for you in the dark?

S2E4 BTK Part 4 - #7 Nancy Jo Fox - How Many Do I Have to Kill

S2E4 BTK Part 4 - #7 Nancy Jo Fox - How Many Do I Have to Kill

S2E4 BTK Part 4 - Nancy Jo Fox - How Many Do I Have to Kill

December 9th, 1977, just 16 days before Christmas, was a day that would change the lives of Dale and Ruth Fox forever. This was the day they learned their daughter; 25-year-old
Nancy Fox was the victim of a brutal murder in her small, pink, two-room duplex apartment where she’d lived alone for the last two years. Dennis Rader had begun preparations for “Project Foxhunt” long before this fateful night, even going so far as to visit her work more than once to get a better idea of who she was. Rader felt no need to change his methods and continued to surprise women when they came home only this time, he added to his repertoire.

Not long after Nancy Fox became BTK’s 7th victim, Dennis Rader began to wonder why he wasn’t getting more airtime on the news. He figured that by this time, he was a big deal in Wichita, Kansas, and decided that if they weren’t going to discuss him
voluntarily then he was going to make it happen. He didn’t just want to be a local story, he wanted national attention, and this is when things really started getting weird. Welcome to Part 4 of our series on BTK where we give an extremely detailed look into the murder of Nancy Fox and the subsequent contact of BTK with the media and investigators which starts the games Rader enjoyed
    playing with law enforcement.

S2E2 BTK Part 2 - #5 Kathryn Bright and First Police Contact

S2E2 BTK Part 2 - #5 Kathryn Bright and First Police Contact

April 4th, 1974, was a cold spring day in Wichita, Kansas, and the day that Dennis Rader, known as BTK, decided to complete his next project as he referred to his murders. His first killings of the Otero Family, which he called Project Little Mex, were less than three months prior but he now had a taste for it.

Believing the chaos of the Otero’s murders was the reason he didn’t feel satisfied, Rader felt that if he could ensure things went according to plan with Kathryn Bright, which he called Project Lights Out, he could satisfy his hellish urges and possibly quit
    his deadly pastime.

Not only did things not go according to plan, but an
unexpected victim also escaped after being shot twice in the head and almost shot with his own .357 Magnum pistol. Besides a lust for killing, there is one other thing Dennis Rader had in abundance, ego.

Six months after Kathryn Bright’s murder, 3 men confessed to her killing and the attempted murder of her brother Kevin. Rader decided that he’d be damned if someone else was going to take credit for his hard work, so he made himself known to the
authorities by contacting a local newspaper which began a game of cat and mouse that lasted 30 years.

    S2E1 BTK Part 1 - The Otero Family - Victims #1-4

    S2E1 BTK Part 1 - The Otero Family - Victims #1-4

    Dennis Rader a.k.a. BTK

On a cold winter morning in January of 1974, a killer
stalked the Otero family of Wichita, Kansas. Little did they know that by the
time school let out that day, the lives of four members of the Otero family
would be brutally taken and those of the three surviving children would become
a never-ending nightmare. Dennis Rader, a married father of two, an Air Force
veteran, Park City employee, president of his church council, and boy scout
leader, a seemingly normal man and pillar of his community terrorized Wichita
Kansas for over 30 years as the serial killer known as BTK which stands for
Bind them, Torture them, Kill them.

Come with me as we follow in the steps of Dennis Rader that
fateful morning and then those of investigating officers as they worked to identify
the monster that tore the young family apart. Justice eluded the surviving
members of the Otero family for over 3 decades but thanks to an arrogant mistake
on the part of Dennis Rader, and good old-fashioned police work, BTK was
finally put where he belongs, behind bars for life.

Welcome to season two. I’m your host Elton Morgan flying
solo this season, my wife Cherish is pursuing other endeavors, and this…is The American Serial Killer Guidebook.
