From Shock to Strength: Empowering Responses to Microaggressions with Dr. Ava Greenwell

From Shock to Strength: Empowering Responses to Microaggressions with Dr. Ava Greenwell

Kat and Shan are back!!  They dive deep into the world of microaggressions with Dr. Ava Greenwell, and how they impact individuals and teams in everyday life.

Microaggressions are defined as subtle, brief, verbal or non-verbal, everyday slights and indignities that are generally targeted towards historically marginalized groups. They can be unintentional, but their impact on the individual cannot be ignored.
Dr. Ava Greenwell sheds light on the subject and shares her insights and experiences. She explains that if we recognize that we have committed a microaggression, we should go back to the person and ask if they are okay. Dr. Greenwell also discusses the impact of microaggressions on teamwork, which can lead to holding back ideas and feeling less involved and productive.

The impact of microaggressions is not just emotional but also physical. Higher cortisol levels, the stress hormone, and higher blood pressure can lead to a shorter lifespan.

Dr. Greenwell talks about how to best respond to microaggressions. Here are some questions you can ask to disarm the other person, but not attack them:
What did you mean by that?Could you say that again? The responsibility of leaders is also discussed in the podcast, with Dr. Greenwell emphasizing the importance of training and language to build empathy and emotional intelligence. The need for different points of view on belonging, diversity, and microaggressions is also highlighted.
Tune in so you can get a better handle on this topic that affects almost everyone.

Kat & Shan are on a break while Jodi & Courtney fill in.

The ladies speak with Chad Castor, General Manager of Toyota of Muncie in Muncie, IN. Chad identified one of the most significant areas for improvement in the dealership for long-term employee retention: Onboarding.

What does the onboarding process look like where you work? And what are employees' first days like when they start? Do they feel special? Or are they just a number that has to file a lot of paperwork with HR?

Chad will take you through a process he implemented in his dealership called the "Your LAST First Day", This has improved employee turnover so extensively that it is down to the single digits!

How does he do this? Chad is transparent and generous in sharing his process, which has made all the difference in his store. His method has reduced turnover and provided benefits to his store culture leaps and bounds more than he could ever have imagined at first.

His store is known for t-shirts he and his team wear that read "Culture Is Everything", and they genuinely live that philosophy each day in the store and out in the community. His dealership philosophy is widely known around town, attracting more women and diversity to his store.

Happy Holidays from all of us at Get In Her Lane!  Episode #10 is the final episode of Season 1 and 2022.

Kathleen, Shannon, and Jamie tackle the dealership technician shortage, an industry-wide problem, and the fact that only 1.3% of technicians are female.  They speak with Debbie and Lisa from Rudy Luther Toyota.

As one of the GMs in the Luther organization, Debbie talks about their corporate training center and program for training techs for all of their dealership brands. This program includes a weekly stipend, free tuition, up to a $4,000 tool scholarship, and job placement. There is currently a waiting list to get in!

While not every dealership can offer this size and scale of training, we discuss what can be done at a smaller level.

Click here for the Luther Tech Training Center website:  https://www.lutherauto.com/technical-training-center/

Lisa tells us what it is like to be a female technician at Rudy Luther Toyota, and we can learn some great things from her experience and how much culture matters.

We are now on the Tok!  @getinherlane

Only 6% of Parts Managers are women. How do we increase this number?  We need to start rethinking these positions so they can evolve from their traditional stereotype and begin to attract a more diverse applicant pool.

Join Kat & Shan as they speak with Kaylee Felio from Parts Edge.  She is breaking barriers as a woman working in Parts.  She shares her advice and suggestions about how we can take a fresh look at this business area currently underrepresented by women.

Kaylee also has her own podcast: "The Parts Girl Podcast".
    Find it here: https://www.partsedge.com/the-parts-girl-podcast/

Kaylee can be reached on LinkedIn here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gotopartsgirl/

    Banana pepper
    Jalapeño

    Oil & Vinegar

And any other sauce you like.

We love this, Kaylee, thank you!!

A fresh perspective

Shannon and Kathleen kill it in this podcast. Such a refreshing take in a way that educates without shaming the industry. You can truly tell the team is trying to help the automotive industry grow and thrive in both the short and long term by finding ways to find new talent and do things in a different way.

Season 1 was fantastic and Season 2 started out strong! Can’t wait to see what awesome guys you bring up for the rest of the season.

Brilliant!

This is a worthwhile discussion even if you aren’t in the automotive world as these ideas can relate to a lot of industries. Interesting guests, hosts are easy to listen to, and I love hearing from the producer in each episode. The best part is that you come away with applicable strategies you can use to make your company more inclusive. Thank you, and keep it coming!!
