"There can be no kindness too soon"This podcast was inspired by the greatest resource in education; our students. I found student-voice to be surprisingly absent from educational podcasts, and so "Speaking with Students" was born. My hope is to highlight student experiences and elevate student voices in casual, but meaningful conversations with former students. Engage in the themes and concepts of each episode, driven by the real, live reflections of students.

    A Retrospective: Part I

    A Retrospective: Part I

A Retrospective (Part I): This is part one of a two part series that will serve as a finale to this inaugural season. And I am also thrilled that the founding guest of this podcast, Anthony, makes his return. together we are going to flip the format of this show. I will be handing over the reins to Anthony, who will assume the role of host.

This will give me the chance to reflect back on the conversations that have made this first season so special. Nine guests joined the podcast in season 1, and now it’s time to reflect and share what their stories have meant to me…

    Anjali: The Thief of Joy

    Anjali: The Thief of Joy

The Thief of Joy: With the intention of bookending this first season of the show, I am excited to take the opportunity to reflect on all of the conversations in an episode coming up very soon. A finale of sorts for season one. But until then...
Anjali joins the podcast. Anjali is a landmark guest for the show. We have never met, at least until we sat down to mine her academic experience for lessons and meaning. But on the college campus we both called home, she was a standout leader. We had a fascinating conversation about both what keeps a student in their shell, and what draws them out… I am really proud of this episode.

    Serena: Say Yes!

    Serena: Say Yes!

Say Yes: As a film and media teacher, I have always enjoyed working with creative students, and I was excited to make student creativity a focus of an episode.

Today, Serena joins the podcast. If you had Serena as a student, you would have likely seen her, at some point, carrying around her camera. Serena’s passion for photography was clear to her classmates and to her teachers…and her photography was wonderful. I thought Serena would make an awesome guest because her creativity and her pursuit of photography made her unique. I also thought Serena would be a  great guest to discuss the question, “What do creatives need?”

You can follow Serena's photography @Serena.Nappa. You won't be disappointed!

Greg: Here's Greg with the Weather

Greg: Here's Greg with the Weather

"When you come across a weatherman in white sneakers, be kind."

Out in Colorado, surrounded by mountain views, is one of the country's fastest growing cities. And if you ever find yourself in Denver, either permanently or for a brief retreat, you may turn on the news to catch an overview of the day’s weather, and if you were to do that you may hear a phrase that has echoed from east coast to west… “now here’s Greg with the weather.”
Today, Greg joins the podcast… Greg turned an early interest in Meteorology into an exciting role as a meteorologist and weatherman for NBC Denver… I am eager to hear about Greg’s academic journey, and ask him about the lessons that stood out along the way.

You can follow Greg's meteorology work @9NewsDenver and you can follow weatherman, Greg Perez @GregPerezwx. You won't be disappointed!

Kat: Meet Them Where They Are

Kat: Meet Them Where They Are

Meet Them Where They Are: Today, Kat joins the podcast… Kat is a dynamic, energetic personality, with a background in both history and psychology. She’s now in graduate school seeking a degree in school counseling, but when Kat and I met, she was a ninth grader in my social studies class. That is right. This makes Kat a landmark guest for me, because she was my student nine years ago during my student teaching experience. And as a ninth grader, she made me laugh, and brought such energy to the classroom.. I knew it would be awesome to talk to her again. I also knew that, with her graduate experience, she would make an excellent guest to expand the conversation we had with Ray from episode five, “What students need”

And with that said, welcome back to Speaking with Students...

Put this podcast in your yay folder!

This podcast is so much more than a podcast about education. It is so much more than a discussion of the student experience and how we can improve upon it for future generations. It is a rethinking of the human experience, how we interact with one another and can improve upon our tendencies, to be better at collaborating, creating spaces for each of us to live our best life while also allowing room for imperfection and celebrating little victories, individually and collectively.

The concepts that arise in each episode can often be applied outside of a classroom environment. Encouraging others, shaping our failures into something useful and more positive, understanding the importance of meeting people where they are, keeping a yay folder to reflect on our success and joys, prioritizing mental health, and, above all, recognizing the power that each of us has to impact those around us in a way that is meaningful and sometimes even life-changing. These are all tools we would do well to equip in our daily lives.

Will may be new to podcasting but you would never know it. As a host, he is down to earth and receptive while facilitating thoughtful conversation. The passion he brings to each discussion is reflected in his guests’ eagerness to share their stories. I look forward to what season two of this show will bring. Do yourself a favor and subscribe to this one.
