Beyond All Repair Ch. 2: The Case

Amory learns more about Marlyne Johnson, Sophia Johnson’s late mother-in-law, and her murder is explored through footage of Sophia’s 2003 trial.

Clark County Detective Rick Buckner and his team narrowed the field of suspects to siblings Sophia and Sean Correia (Shane Correia's older brother and sister).

Sean testified during Sophia’s 2003 murder trial that he saw his sister standing over Marlyne’s body, holding fireplace tongs.

Beyond All Repair Ch. 3: Bad Blood

Beyond All Repair Ch. 3: Bad Blood

Sean Correia's credibility is called into question as Sophia Johnson and Shane Correia tell Amory about his role in their upbringing. Amory learns how these three siblings ended up in Washington state after being raised in New York, and how Sophia became estranged from Shane and their mother, with whom she’d been incredibly close.

Sophia finds a new family in the Johnsons — Brad, her husband, and Marlyne and Richard Johnson, Brad’s parents.

At the time of the murder, Sophia is newly wedded to Brad and six months pregnant. Marlyne is supposed to go over to Sophia’s house for lunch that day. She doesn’t show, leading Sophia and Brad to check on her, and, ultimately, to her lifeless, nearly unrecognizable body.

Sophia denies murdering Marlyne, but suspects Sean’s involvement.

The most fascinating part, isn’t even the story being told!

The host did a great job remaining impartial and presenting the evidence uncovered. However, this story has all the hallmarks of textbook narcissistic sociopathic tendencies. And if this is in fact the case, which I highly suspect that it is, this means there is not a single empathetic bone in this individual’s body, this human is not capable of having any feelings at all. This is made very evident by the inability to forge genuine relationships with anyone in her life. She latches on to people who are broken and have low self esteem, she leaches off of them until they are of no further use to her. Each time she expresses emotion, it is parroted based off others who are reacting around her. There is no doubt in my mind that she masterminded this murder. We did not hear the truth in this podcast but we never will because she is not a person capable of being honest. Trying to understand ‘the why’ or ‘the how’ is a futile effort. And the biggest mistake that can be made would be trying to investigate and understand this case through a lens of sanity. There is no amount of logic, natural human behavior, or emotional attachment assumption that can be applied because this individual does not operate within those realms. I typically do not love a story without a clear and concise ending but this podcast was an excellent example of the different depths of the human psyche and the destruction that just one morally and mentally corrupt person can bring to countless families. In my opinion, the only humane thing she has ever done, although unintentional, was give her son up, so that he was not destined to live a life filled with manipulation and devastation. I do not think this was meant to be a horror story but it is! It is absolutely fascinating but beyond terrifying that we are walking around in the same world amongst individuals like her.

Host is wonderful!

Host did a great job staying neutral. It also helps that she was patient as there are a lot of lies. There is so much trauma and brokenness in this family that I fear we’ll never know what happened.

Excellent Reporting

One of my favs and I listen to a lot of true crime deep dives. I love that Amory actually gave her opinion at the end. Most hosts won’t do that. And I totally agree with her evaluation of Sophia. Would have liked to hear more from the husband, Brad. I’m not convinced he was completely innocent in all this.
