    The Economics of Matchmaking

    The Economics of Matchmaking

There is an economic approach to matchmaking, pioneered in the early 1960s and advanced by Chicago's Gary Becker in the 1970s. Today, there are online matchmakers of many sorts: auction sites like eBay that match buyers and sellers, search platforms like Google that match ads with consumers, and, of course, online dating sites. In this talk, Ali Horta~ASSsu will discuss recent research that connects economic theory to hugely popular matchmaking Web sites of all types. This includes Horta~ASSsu's own work based on the collection of data from eBay, Google, and a major online dating site.

    One-Way Contracts

What if consumer contracts were legally enforceable only against the consumers, but not against the business? The idea of "one-way contracts," to which consumers are bound but the businesses are not, is offered as a basis to explore alternative, non-legal consumer protections. Despite weakening legal protections of consumers, the one-way contracts regime has the potential to improve consumers' well being. In fact, in many area consumer contracts are already disguised "one-way contracts." The conclusion is that the focus among consumer protection advocates on enhancing access to, and the scope of, legal remedies may be misguided. Omri Ben-Shahar is Frank and Bernice J. Greenberg Professor of Law at the University of Chicago Law School.

Cochrane's lecture is still relevant and timely 2 years later. Definitely worth a listen. Booth, as an alum, please post more often.
