The Shriver Center at UMBC serves as a national leader in promoting applied learning, civic engagement, and community-based service delivery programs. Through Center initiatives, faculty connect their research and teaching to relevant social needs, and students link academic study to professional practice and service to the community. Annually, the Center coordinates over 1,600 placements of undergraduate and graduate students through its Cooperative Education, Internships, Research and Service-Learning programs, as well as the Shriver Peaceworker Program, thus serving as the campus’ primary vehicle for producing socially engaged citizens who graduate with the commitment and experience to serve responsibly in their communities, state and nation.  The Center also responds to the critical need for effective solutions to pressing urban issues by designing and operating innovative and effective community-based service projects. The Choice Program, a nationally acclaimed community-based, family-centered case management approach to delinquency prevention and youth development, fcouses on providing support in at-risk environments.  The Center’s multifaceted approach to applied learning, and the development and operation of national service delivery programs, was recognized by the Templeton Foundation as a “prototype for urban education in the 21st century.”
