Why is it important to study language variation? Language variations and differences occur naturally and are part of how we define ourselves, individually as well as socially. Whether we drink soda or pop, whether we pronounce the word “aunt” as ant or ahnt, whether we use isn’t or ain’t, language tells us something about who we are as speakers of the ever-changing English language.

As a Baltimorean who has tried to de-train myself from my native dialect I really enjoyed listening to this. It affirmed there’s a time and place for it, and it definitely made me think about how bing male and using the word “hon” could be sexist. Some of this was outright filariasis, and I loved the Nina Simone!! Great job!!
