Liberty University's Department of Theatre Arts has launched a new extension of their academic program, Playhouse of the Airwaves, a radio drama for adults. David Steele (Director/Producer), after years of listening to Adventures in Odyssey, was inspired to develop a radio drama that wasn’t just for kids, but could reach a different generation of people with stories that went further, discussed deeper issues, and brought back the glory years of radio drama, a seemingly lost art.
Playhouse of the Airwaves is an opportunity for the students involved in the Department of Theatre Arts to get their voices heard and their stories told. The Department offers a script writing class that Theatre Majors undergo, and often their stories are written down on paper, and voiced for a final exam, but no one out in the real world will ever hear those stories.
Until now.
Those involved with Playhouse of the Airwaves select certain plays written by students and alumni that may never be performed on a stage and we give them the opportunity to hear that story performed in a completely new medium: radio. Most theatre students will go through their entire college career and only act on stage. Playhouse of the Airwaves was developed as an opportunity for theatre students to develop a skill in voice acting, which could open a plethora of doors to different careers within the acting community.
Playhouse of the Airwaves is just another way the Department of Theatre Arts is seeking to bring quality theatrical entertainment to Lynchburg, and also, anywhere you can find a radio.

Peak of Defiance Part 1
Learn about one of the mountaintop cities--the Peak of Defiance. Picasso hears a lovely song that haunts him, allowing him to see a vision of a third city that no one else can see. In Defiance, learn how the city runs and meet Ultraviolet and Stylus. Ultraviolet and Stylus begin to develop a personal relationship that could have a major impact on the future of those who think differently than the Scholar.

Christmas Carol
Original story by Charles Dickens, adapted for Radio by Orson Welles in 1939, and edited by David Steele for the Playhouse of the Airwaves. Directed, Edited and Produced by David Steele, Tracks Mastered by Mark Edwards. Department of Theatre Arts actors involved: Bryan Bulebush, Christie Osterhus, Hannah Glavin, Kim Camacho, Jared Calhoun, Will Lightfoot, Kara Faraldi, Audrey Moore, Nick Henretty, McKenzie Connell, and Caleb Towns as Ebeneezer Scrooge.

The Eye
The Eye is a modern adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell Tale Heart. It is a very dark story describing one man's descent into insanity. The Eye was written by alumnus Carson Burkett as his Honors Thesis during his senior year at Liberty University and was directed/edited/produced by David Steele. Our actors featured both students and faculty from the Department of Theatre Arts: Bryan Bulebush, Christie Osterhus, Neal Brasher, Christopher Nelson, Nicole Piacentino, Kara Faraldi, Wesley Bryan, and Barry Gawinski.

O.C.D. Radio Performance
OCD is a story about the challenges a married couple face, and the stress involved when one of them has a very extreme case of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). There is some comedy and some drama, but ultimately it is a story about grace we show to others because of the grace shown to us by Christ.
OCD, was written by Jamie Cloutier, directed/produced/edited by David Steele, and our actors were Alex Miller in the role of Gerry and Kelli Overmyer in the role of Maggie.

Looking forward to this, but was it dropped? Like the idea nd think that it would be beneficial to the community as well as local students with families...
Hilariously Awful
As someone who appreciates the quality of Big Finish Productions' audio dramas, there's only one word for the assembly of random audio dramas offered by Liberty University: hilarious. Are you having a dull day? Is life crushing you? Then take a listen to these dramas! Hilariously bad lines! Hilariously awful acting! Sound design that makes you pause in confusion--then hurt yourself laughing! The only negative is that they apparently did so badly they can only produce one drama every few years, because I'd love more of these to laugh at.
