Given all of the possibilities we have living in a modern society, people still struggle with feeling lost, unhappy, and unfulfilled.

It’s even been reported that American unhappiness hit a record low early this year. If you do a climate check with the people in your life and your social media pages, it’s not hard to see that sadly behind some of the smiles, there’s a feeling of unhappiness in the air.

Arthur C. Brooks is the William Henry Bloomberg Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership at the Harvard Kennedy School and Professor of Management Practice at the Harvard Business School. He’s discussing why he felt called to explore and research the human experience and model of what actually brings us happiness.

If money, fame, power, and pleasure doesn’t bring permanent happiness, then what does? How can you ensure a trajectory of life that leads to happiness and fulfillment?

Is aging gracefully and being healthy in your old age a goal or something that’s nice to hope for with no real expectations? If you search for tips on how to age gracefully, you get tips for how to be more mindful, be more forgiving, stay curious, keep learning, and more. You’ll find a few tips around staying physically active, but you don’t see a lot of advice (if any) on building muscle, getting in the gym, hitting the weights, and putting your body under stress.

Dr. Gabrielle Lyon began her 20+ year career in geriatric medicine and palliative care. In her observations and studies on people in declining physical and mental health she became passionately aware of the missed opportunity in the medical community. Chronic diseases commonly associated with aging such as Alzheimers, cardiac disease, and diabetes, were being studied without addressing the underlying source that’s contributing to the problems, deteriorating skeletal muscle.

By the end of this episode, if you’re not convinced on the power of muscle building you may want to rewatch. Whether you are male or female, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, or older, everyone needs to be invested in building muscle tissue to age gracefully and have a better quality of life. Healthy aging isn’t just about maintaining mental cognition with a failing body, it’s about having quality interactions and the physical ability to stand, walk, and travel without the fear of falling or being dependent on everyone for everything.

“The wider the waistline the lower the brain volume.” [23:19]

“Lifestyle, choices midlife, having access to the right information changes the trajectory of aging.” [23:41]

“Muscle is a nutrient sensing organ.” [34:26]

“In the literature high quality protein is defined by amino acid content. It’s not a negotiable nebulous concept; these are hard fast biological numbers.” [36:47]

“When we’re talking about the general population, typically people don't have a good solid foundational muscular base.” [43:33]

“Everybody’s focused on adiposity, everybody’s focusing on insulin resistance, and if you care about root causes you have to care about skeletal muscle.” [45:22]

“You have to train hard, [...] you have to get the stress in. The body thrives under stress, [...] your body requires physical stress.” [56:34]

“When we are older, 30s, 40s, we are now no longer driven by hormones. We are now driven by dietary sensing mechanisms.” [57:27]

So how many Instagram posts and YouTube videos have influenced your vision of fitness, overall health, and proper diet? How many have you tried that left you frustrated and pissed off? Probably too many to count or recall. We’re bombarded with misinformation about fitness, exercise, and diet at nauseum. It’s not getting you or anyone closer to the results you really desire, and it almost makes the results you want a bit unclear and confusing.

Sal DiStefano is no newcomer to the fitness scene. By the age of 19 he was already general manager at a local gym. Unfortunately for him, but lucky for you and all of his clients since, he had a health scare of his own from an autoimmune disorder which resulted in him losing 15 pounds of muscle! Sal refocused and started learning more about gut health, hormone health and how to prioritize health over appearance.

His book, The Resistance Training Revolution, breaks down fitness misconceptions that social media and bad diet fads are flooding you with. In this episode, break through the idea of relying on cardio to burn those extra calories and start realizing the amazing benefits strength training offers your body. Stop training just to lose weight fast and look good, and make the mindset shift to start approaching diet and exercise for the right reasons, so it becomes lifelong and sustainable.

“When it comes to improving all health metrics, mental, psychological, and physical, as you follow along, as you continue the process, it gets better and better. There's no medication that does that at all.” [18:46]

“Don't go to the gym and workout, go to the gym and practice these exercises and try to get good at these exercises.” [24:33]

“If we judge exercise by the people that perform it at the highest level, we're also looking at people who genetically were born to also perform at very high levels.” [25:52]

Some of life’s experiences are not exclusive to color, race, or sex. Feeling stuck, unhappy in a situation, and having uncertainty and fear around how to navigate through it or remain in it is something nearly everyone can identify with.

Knowing how to get yourself out of the situations that make you feel small is challenging. The mindset that keeps you from succeeding in a life you only dream of is something that can be changed, but where do you begin?

Lisa Bilyeu, President of Impact Theory, creator and host of Women of Impact is with hubby, Tom Bilyeu, sharing exactly how she took herself from a stay-at-home super supportive wife to ultra-successful serial entrepreneur. In her new book, Radical Confidence, Lisa shares her struggles with life’s plans taking a wrong turn, struggling with confidence, and going after a life that truly mattered to her.

For Lisa, being backed against the wall in these do or die circumstances forced her to have the difficult but honest conversations with herself about what she wanted, who she wanted to become, and how she was going to get there. The alternative was not an outcome Lisa was willing to accept. She’s built a heck of a toolkit along the way to becoming courageous and confident as f*ck in her bad b*ch boots. There are major gems here for anyone no matter where you are in your journey.

Lisa reminds us to embrace the beauty of you, be compassionate, and be sensitive, but never to the detriment of losing yourself.

It’s likely you’ve heard that a confused mind says, no and in this very special episode Mark Zuckerberg joins Tom to share his thoughts around what the metaverse can potentially do for social connection and community.

The unchartered territory of building a metaverse economy leaves the door wide open to what Mark calls an immersive internet that will change gaming and how and where you are able to work. Building technology in a space that hasn’t been created is no easy feat, yet Mark Zuckerberg, who needs no introduction, has been doing this for nearly two decades.

Even if you’ve yet to explore metaverse, virtual reality, and NFTs, Mark’s insights to how he’s been building one of the largest companies on the planet is a business class unto itself. Meta NFT announcement at a glance:

Starting this week we’ll begin testing Digital Collectibles on Instagram, which will allow a small group of U.S. creators and collectors to share NFTs on Instagram that they have created or bought. In the future, we will also roll out Digital Collectibles on Facebook and allow people to display and share their digital collectibles as AR stickers in Instagram Stories, bringing the benefits of this technology to even more creators and collectors.

Details on how digital collectibles will work:

Creators and collectors in this test group will be able to post NFTs that they created or own on Instagram by linking third-party digital wallets in-app.

NFTs displayed on the app will receive a special ‘shimmer’ visual treatment and both the creator and owner of the NFT will be attributed for the content.

Starting at launch, the blockchains that are supported include Ethereum and Polygon, with Flow and Solana coming soon.

The third-party wallets compatible for use at launch will include Rainbow, MetaMask, and Trust Wallet, with Coinbase and Dapper coming soon.

This is everything!

People, this podcast is everything!!!!
Being a believer in positive mindset and it’s impact on your actual brain and how it filters into your physicality and actions is one thing. But being able to listen to likeminded people dig into the nitty gritty of how exactly to do that and why it’s important is life-changing!!!
If you’re ready for growth, listen yesterday!

Great but STOP interrupting guests

I love the content and the guests. Tom’s questions are very good but you can hear the guests train of thought stop as he interrupts to get his question in. He could learn from Tim Ferris on how to do this better. I can’t stand being in conversations with someone that does this so it is troublesome and annoying to listen to it happen to others.
