Since the pandemic, remote and hybrid working have become part of the workplace planning lexicon. But with the debate about the pros and cons of working away from the office still in full flight, change is also being fuelled by increasingly sophisticated automation technologies, which in turn offers the attractive potential of significant cost savings afforded by downsizing office accommodation.

A "Digital Twin" is a virtual model of a process, product, or service. The pairing of the virtual and physical worlds allows analysis of data collected to predict potential issues before they even occur; preventing downtime, developing new opportunities, and even plan for the future by using simulations, for example.

It’s not uncommon for us to consider a positive outcome in the future, or a negative one. The utopian view or the dystopian view. But the likelihood is of a future with both positive and negative elements, much like we have seen in the present and the past.

Today, we are exploring the dichotomy between advanced technology changing everything for the better and a world in chaos because of climate change. Will we harness these amazing technology advances to resolve our challenges in the second half of the 21st century and create a technotopia, and will we recover from sliding into climate change fuelled dystopia?

Jacinda Ardern’s decision to step down as New Zealand’s Prime Minister came as a surprise to many. She became the world’s youngest female head of government when she was elected prime minister in 2017 at 37. She has led New Zealand through the Covid-19 pandemic, and a series of disasters including the terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, and the White Island volcanic eruption.

Asked how she would like New Zealanders to remember her leadership, Ardern said “as someone who always tried to be kind”.

“I hope I leave New Zealanders with a belief that you can be kind, but strong, empathetic but decisive, optimistic but focused. And that you can be your own kind of leader – one who knows when it’s time to go,” Ardern said.

The prime minister of Australia, Anthony Albanese, paid tribute to Ardern, saying she “has shown the world how to lead with intellect and strength … She has demonstrated that empathy and insight are powerful leadership qualities.”

Relational Systems Architect, Leadership Development & Impact Coach, and creator of Mycelium Collab Alessandra Marazzi posed the question, “What would the world look if we all wanted to be remembered, as someone who always tried to be kind?” Which in turn begs the question, “Is kindness the leadership competence of the future?”
