"The Procrastinator's Brain: Unraveling the Neuroscience behind our Delays" W/ Terre Short

"The Procrastinator's Brain: Unraveling the Neuroscience behind our Delays" W/ Terre Short

Procrastination is something we all deal with, whether it's putting off a task at work or avoiding going to the gym. It's a habit that can negatively impact our lives in various ways, from increasing stress levels to harming our overall health and wellbeing. But why do we procrastinate, and what can we do to break the cycle? According to Terre Short, the answer lies in our brain's reward system. "Our brain is wired to seek pleasure and avoid pain," she explains. "When we have a task that we don't want to do, it can feel like a source of pain. So, our brain starts to look for alternatives that can offer immediate pleasure instead." This is where procrastination comes in. "When we procrastinate, we're not necessarily lazy or unmotivated," Terre clarifies. "Our brain is simply trying to find a more pleasant way to spend our time." This might mean scrolling through social media, watching TV, or engaging in other activities that give us an immediate sense of pleasure. Unfortunately, this behavior can become a habit over time, making it even harder to break. But there are ways to combat procrastination and improve our productivity. Terri recommends the following strategies: 1. Recognize your triggers: Try to identify what makes you procrastinate in the first place. Is it a particular task, a certain time of day, or a specific environment? Once you know your triggers, you can work to avoid or minimize them. 2. Break tasks into smaller chunks: If a task seems overwhelming or unpleasant, try breaking it down into smaller, more manageable steps. This can make it feel less daunting and more achievable. 3. Set deadlines and hold yourself accountable: Give yourself a deadline for completing a task, and stick to it. You can also enlist the help of a friend or coworker to hold you accountable. 4. Find ways to make tasks more enjoyable: Can you listen to music or a podcast while you work? Can you work in a more pleasant environment? Try to find ways to make tasks more enjoyable or engaging. By implementing these strategies and understanding the neuroscience behind procrastination, we can break the cycle and improve our overall health and wellbeing. Thanks for joining us, and we hope you'll tune in to our next episode for more insights and tips on how to live your healthiest life.

    Mindful Living with Amy Novotny”

    Mindful Living with Amy Novotny”

Welcome to this week's episode of "Mindful Living with Amy Novotny". In this episode, we'll be talking about how to calm down our nervous system and get out of the fight or flight response.

Have you ever experienced that feeling of being stuck in a state of heightened anxiety, where everything seems like a threat and you feel constantly on edge? Well, that's what we call the fight or flight response, and it's something that our bodies have evolved to do in response to stressors.

But sometimes, our bodies can get stuck in this state, even when there's no real threat present. And that's when we start to experience symptoms like anxiety, panic attacks, and even physical health problems.

So, how can we get out of the fight or flight response and calm down our nervous system?

Firstly, it's important to recognize when you're experiencing this response. Some signs may include feeling tense, heart racing, or sweating profusely. Once you've identified this, it's time to start practicing some simple techniques that can help calm you down.

One technique that works really well for many people is deep breathing. Simply take a deep breath in, hold it for a few seconds, and then slowly release it. You can repeat this a few times until you feel calmer.

Another technique is to use mindfulness to become aware of your thoughts and emotions. Often, just acknowledging what's going on in your mind can help to reduce the intensity of your fight or flight response.

Additionally, taking time to do relaxing activities such as taking a walk in nature, reading a book, or taking a bath can also help you relax.

Remember, it's important to take care of your body and mind by practicing self-care and getting the rest you need. This will not only help you feel better, but also help to keep your nervous system calm and in balance.

The Abundant Life: Embracing Rebecca Whitman's Seven Pillars

The Abundant Life: Embracing Rebecca Whitman's Seven Pillars

As I sit here, pen in hand, ready to dive into the topic of abundance, my mind starts to swirl with ideas and questions. What does abundance truly mean? Is it a tangible thing that we can touch and feel? Or is it more of a mindset, a way of looking at the world and our place in it?

After some reflection, I believe that abundance is a combination of both. It's a mindset that allows us to see all the blessings and opportunities that surround us, while also acknowledging the physical gifts we have been given. In this sense, abundance is not just about having more money or possessions, but about experiencing a fullness of life in all its many forms.

So, what are the pillars of abundance? In my opinion, there are seven key components that make up a truly abundant life:

    1. Gratitude: This is perhaps the most important pillar of all. When we cultivate a mindset of gratitude, we open ourselves up to receiving more abundance. It's all about recognizing and appreciating the many blessings in our lives, no matter how big or small.

    2. Generosity: When we give freely and generously to others, we create a sense of abundance that radiates outwards. Whether it's giving our time, money, or resources, being generous is a key component of a life full of abundance.

    3. Courage: Sometimes, abundance requires us to step outside of our comfort zones and take risks. Whether it's starting a new business, pursuing a passion, or making a difficult life choice, having the courage to face challenges head-on is crucial.

    4. Mindfulness: In order to experience abundance, we need to be fully present in the moment and aware of our surroundings. By practicing mindfulness and being mindful of our thoughts and emotions, we can cultivate a deeper sense of connection and appreciation for the world around us.

    5. Resilience: Life is full of ups and downs, and we need to be resilient in order to weather the storms. When we can bounce back from adversity and find the silver lining in tough situations, we're better able to embrace abundance.

    6. Creativity: Creativity is the spark that ignites abundance. Whether it's painting, writing, cooking, or dancing, tapping into our creative side allows us to fully express ourselves and create abundance in all areas of our lives.

    7. Connection: Finally, abundance is all about connection - to ourselves, to others, and to the world around us. When we can forge meaningful relationships with others, and cultivate a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and the universe, we're truly living a life of abundance.

In conclusion, abundance is not a finite thing that can be measured or weighed. It's a multifaceted concept that encompasses a wide range of values and beliefs. By embracing the seven pillars of abundance - gratitude, generosity, courage, mindfulness, resilience, creativity, and connection - we can cultivate a life that's truly rich and fulfilling.
